Title: unkown vibration
Post by: madmv6 on 26 October 2009, 11:19:54
Hi I have got an omega mv6 3.0 saloon pre-facelift and it has a bad vibration above 70mph that shakes the entire car and does not go away, I have had new wheels and tyres balanced and fitted, new discs and pads all round and this has not helped. I was wondering what else would cause this.
Any help would be appreciated.

Is the vibration comming from the front or the rear?
Have you had a look at all the rubber joints both front and rear?

it would be the one with the universal joint or rubber round it, push it up and down if has a lot of play then may be going, also can find out if it that drive at 25-30mph and put in 5gear if it starts then its a good sign its going. :y

Get it into a high street chain for a free safety check ,,,,,,

Just make sure thy SHOW YOU whats wrong so that you can make a value judgement about what to do about it.

there should be no play as such in them but they do have small ball joints inside which wear and can give roughly the symptoms you have

i have looked at the car today and cant find any probloems, i have been told that the propshaft universal joint can sometimes become stiff and cause a vibration at speed but im not sure

Just picked up your post. I had the same prob, 6 months ago,and sorted it by getting a 4 wheel alignment. Have had no probs since

Might be worth a pop over to WIM and let them have a look for you if everythings hine the will do a full geometry set up for you. Tracking isn't enough on the omega although i wouldn't have thought that wheel alignment being out would cause to much vibration :o . If there is a problem with anything WIM won't do the geometry but will tell you what you need to fix first HTH :y

i have had 4 wheel alignment checked but that was spot on, i think i might have to get a second hand prop but im not sure if the auto propshaft will fit or not

I had a similar problem which was diagnosed by various tyre shops as balancing, oval tyres, wishbone bushes - I tried everything and then my latest mechanic now that I have moved to Glasgow pointed out that there was play in the steering tie bar - replaced this and 2 track rod ends and the steering is back to perfect again with no vibrations.

Moral of the story - check every joint on the front end

i have checked everything on the front and its ok but the vibration is not coming throught the stearing wheel it comes through the floor of the car and is pretty harsh

if it's through the floor it will definitely be prop shaft

I seem to have a similar problem, but it occurs if driving over 80 mph
Ok if the propshaft is the problem what needs replacing?
And can anybody explain what is the difference between tracking and full geometry setup?
Thanks

Tracking will sort out the toe in toe out situation of the wheels, but on the omega you also need to make sure the camber is setup correctly. Have a look on the Wheels in Motion (WIM) website this will provide you with a more in depth answer  :y
