Title: major virbation from the rear..
Post by: mr miggy on 27 October 2009, 17:02:01
hey guys....
changed my diff over today with one from a highly recommended vauxhall breaker and was told it was a good one....

old unit removed and new one fitted without any problems...

but when i took the car for a test drive all was sweet untill i hit 25 MPH.

the whole back of the car vibrates like crazy, and sounds very vibratey too...... (if you know what i mean)

now, i have done things properly, fitted correctly, put the right amount of oil in it tightened everything up........

what could this be?????

i did notice that the rubber doughnut on the prop has splits in it, but the car did not vibrate, before the diff went pop...i also had to replace the 3 bolts holding the doughnut to the diff as they were chewed up when the diff belw... i replaced them with the same length bolts, but not the same ones....

when the old diff went and my rear wheels locked up.... could i have distorted or bent one or both of my driveshafts, or even the prop??
i also drove the car with a blown diff about 3-4 miles with it clunking like a clunking thing...... :P

i really would like some help and advice as to what it could be causing the vibrations......

thanks for reading.

has it been rebalanced, when my old car had to change it, did the same thing, garage said it had to be rebalanced, they put it up in the air at back with both wheels in air, started the engine one under and one reving it in fist gear, checked to lot found out the 4 bolts were not in sinc as used the old one's put 4 new bolts in, and it was gone. cane see every thing when in air and moving, when the rubber went it did not like 5 gear unless you were doing 70mph, from 40mph it felt like the axle wanted to come off. but i know if it is just a little bit out it will try to shake lose :y:y

so you think that it is just the prop rubber then?????

i can drive through the vibrations...vibrates form 25mph - 40 mph...... but when off the throttle and slowing down it returns.....

i would change the rubber, and get the proper bolts as using ordinary bolts they can shear, new set dont cost alot, then it should be balanced or aleast better. :y

why not see if the drive shafts and donoughts are still available of the scrap car then you have the complete matching unit

Given the range of speeds over which it vibrates, it does sound like the propshaft. I wouldn't be surprised if a siezed diff has damaged at least the rubber coupling.
