Title: 99 estate noisy diff
Post by: simonb on 30 October 2009, 14:30:47
New to the forum and just got a 1999 2.0ltr estate.
The problem being the diff is very noisy and i am looking at changing it as the rest of the car is spot on.
Any ideas on which others fit and fitting tips, will have access to a pit and a mechanic mate to help,oh and any forum friendly breakers?
While i'm on anyone know what sort of mpg i can expect on a mixed run of motorway and a/b roads normal ish driving.

Thanks for now.

would change the oil in dif maybe worn out oil, and when you undo the bolt use a magnet on it for a wile till its magntised again before putting it back in, lot cheaper to see if that is the problem than changing it,  :y

had the same prob on a fourtrack, my mate drained oil put in new, still the same, next came out a big tub of john deere tractor grease, was like semi setting concrete really thick, packed diff noise gone, 6 years on it was still quiet  ::) ::)

try this stuff 75w90 differental oil, Poly ester based Red Line gear oil gives better protection at high and low temperatures. Friction reduction can lead to as much as a 5% power increase at the wheels it's around £15, can get it cheaper. :y

have you put right oil in when you changed it, as you need the high load oil not normal oil, its realy thick stuff bit runnier than marmite, takes about 5-10min to fill as slow to fill up, i used a grease gun,.ordenary oil is to thin.
