Sorry to hear about your car.

Do you mean you are looking for an engine near Cambridge? Or a mechanic ot fit the engine near Cambridge? Or someone to check it is knackered?

I am sure a local will be able to help.

Take the aux belt off first and then re-try it (but if it starts dont run it for to long as there is no water pump running)

Well take the belt off before looking for an engine  :y

Its only a 5 minute job with a 15mm spanner

Was it still running?
No unusual noises?
Temperature gauge reading normally?

Sounds like cam cover gasket dripping oil on the exhaust manifold TBH

I suspect a siezed aircon pump (or another ancillary) resulting in the belt slipping and smoking.

This would give to much strain to allow the starter motor to crank the engine once it had been stopped.

Agreed :y

There must be an art to accurate diagnosis based on almost no information (except the owners level of pain). What people don't say seems to tell us more than what they do ::)

Lol, they always say that the best thing an owner can do is take the car to a garage and say 'its broke', hand the keys over and walk off

My alternative snap diagnosis was based on
They didn't say it wouldn't start
They did say 'no dash lights came on' (dash lights would be on when it isn't running).

I was thinking that the 'suggested engine seized' was the kind of helpful  ::) advice you get from passers by with a warped sense of humour....

could this be that the alternator has gone up in smoke & siezed, hence no lights. just a thought  ::)

Even a siezed aux belt tensioner can prevent the engine starting  .. as was evident at Newent !!!

how very true & was glad to come to the rescue. :y
as my above post, if the alternator had smoked itself & siezed that would explain the lack of lights & no starter.

All.
Thanks for your replys. just to let you know the oil light did come on. My wife had been told that this was probally due to low oil pressure, she tried to get back home but unfortunatley did not make it. the car slowed down and she had to stop. when the AA turned up they checked it over and diganosed that the engine had seized. I have the car at a local mechanics who will check it over me. the Aux belt and tensioner were changed in May this year as were the rocker gaskets. this will be checked again just incase, the engine had done 140000 miles.
probally have been unlucky with oil pump. When I know for defniate it is seized. I will be looking for a replacement engine,as the car is in very good condition. any more replys would be greatfull.

By the time the oil pressure warning light illuminates, the engine is already f**ked.

I used to work with a lad (a very good spark, but useless mechanic  ;D) who used the low pressure warning light as a low level warning ie when the light came on when going round corners he knew he then needed to top it up with oil. Funnily enough he had to spend a few hundred quid on his valve gear/cylinder head .......  :-?  :-?

We did tell him that we suspected the 2 were connected.  :y :y
