That is the last time I let a garage do a service for me. Came to change oil myself today and found sump plug stiff to undo - v suspicious and sure enough replacing it, and it won't tighten. Tried PTFE plumbers tape and got it to hold but still not fully tight - don't dare. I am just worried it will blow off whilst driving.
Any suggestions as to a fix? Is it a sump off and re-tap job or worse, a new sump!!
If I bought one of those oil change pump down the dippy stikky hole gizmos, I could permanently seal off the plug - is there a way to do that without taking the sump off?
I am open to all suggestions ...... !!
-
Many may not agree with me.
I have used a pela pump on my TD for the last 60K mls. It makes oil changes easy and clean,,
I bought the pump after my last TD sump plug threaded.
I tried tapping in a drain plug but it was too low & tore out on a yump.
I would seal the plug permanently with isopon.
I did this years ago with a mirafiori sport that I ripped the sump open on.
Just clean the surround first with petrol or whatever.
-
Thanks for that. Sound a fix to me. You would recommend isopon rather than aralditing in the old bung?
-
Hi Chris, you could have a helicoil fitted, had it done on my Senator :y.
-
Helicoil was on my mind too, you may need to tap it out and go up a size.
be much stonger than original too :y
-
If there's suffucient metal around the sump plug, I'd just tap out a suitable size bigger .... saves you having to re-feed the Helicoil back in its thread each time you do an oil change. ::) :y :y
-
Sounds interesting fix too. Never heard of them before - quick search shows up dazzling array of sizes, types etc. Any guidance as to just what I will need and where from?
Some talk about taps and drills - would this be a sump off job or how do you avoid the scurf getting into the engine or .... ??
Thanks guys
-
Hi you could allways use liquid metal, dont cost alot and if clean when put on it will have fresh thread use it 1s on a head bolt never went in 3years wile had the car. :y

Where you buy the helicoil from should be able to advise you on fitment size needed and as for going the re-tapping route any swarf should be caught by the filter :y.

You would have to take the sump out and thoroughly clean it to use this properly :(.

Sometimes lady luck shines.
Just 10 miles up the A60 is a helicoil kit and replacement sump plug to fit.

But if you're drilling/tapping out a bigger size for the Helicoil, why not just use a bigger sump plug? :-/ ;) ;) ;)

Take the sump to any engineering shop that knows what they are doing, and they'll fix it in under an hour and your original sump plug will still fit.
Don't bother listening to some of the suggestions here (eg, body filler, chemical metal, etc) unless you intend to sell it as soon as you've carried out the bodge which will result in a new sump being required..
-
Hmmmm ... lots of options to think about - well I did ask didn't I! ;D
Thanks guys, keep them coming, the more the merrier :y

You only have 3 options if you are going to do the job properly....
1. Helicoil it (original sump plug will still fit)
2. Drill & tap (will require oversize sump plug)
3. Buy a new sump
-
But is it the sump that's stripped or the plug?
-
It will be the sump stripped, they are alloy on the tractor.
The kit I have only requires a replacement sump plug because its actualy for spark plugs....I dont have the correct size helicoil kit for the standard sump plug. But thats irrelivant as I have a sump plug that will fit the helicoil.

Ah, didn't realise it was a tractor ::)
-
My option was the cheap easy option. If someone will helicoil it for free, sump on, go for that.
Most boats engines pump sump oil out and do interstellar milage.
The car is worth 5-15hundred so why spend a lot when a little will make life easier!!!!
-
ahhh the old plastacine tractor sump ;D
-
I would be taking the MDTM option ;)
-
Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I am going to go with the helicoil option and get a Pela pump so I don't have to drain the b#####r again.

:y
pumping oil out is gonna leave a lot of sludge behind :-/
I wouldnt.
imho - Helicoil, and drain as normal :y

Definitely!

Could do with getting the helicoil kit back please.....and the wrench for the tap
-
.....
I am open to all suggestions ...... !!
I replaced the lower sump pan on mine with a new one from vauxhall. It wasn't expensive IIRC it was less than £60 for thesump pan, sealant/gasket & oil. Bolton council paid for mine! ;) ;)

You would not want to do that on a TD, not so easy!
Note, this post was answered in mid September its just I have not had my loaned out tools back :'(

If members are slow to return loaned tools, this will most likely reduce the chances of the loaning member being so willing to loan again :'(

I concur ;) ;)

Always seems to be your Helicoil kit too....
wasnt it that Paul M up in Scotland last time?
that kit's jinxed ;D
-
There's no excuse for it - what the hell are people thinking about now?
-
Might be worth knocking on his door
-
He has been in contact and has had some personal issues.
Should all be sorted soon.
