Think the stat in mother tunnies 3.0 is a bit sticky, had cruise control set dead on 80mph, temp read 75 on the motorway :-?
If the engine is worked hard i can get the temp up, but it does not stay there, takes some time to get up to temp too. (TB for reference its still sub 80 after Croughton Roundabout)
Fuel economy is a bit off too, on a gentle cruise (never revving over 4k) long motorway run, only got 26.2mpg.

Sounds very much like the thermostat.
I changed mine last month, the symptoms were a little bit worse (it wanted to run at about 70degC). With the new stat it runs between 85 and 90degC.
Fuel economy is better now too.

yup.. sounds like stat..

Funny you should say that Tun, I thought exactly the same thing about my tractor this morning on the way to work! 2.5 miles from cold the gauge has normally moved up by about halfway to work, heaters normally blowing nice and hot and average 31mpg. Average has dropped to 28, the gauge was still on the bottom at work and barely warm air out the heater. I know what I'm doing Saturday morning now ::)
[edit]Just thought I need to have the intake plenum off at the weekend too. One of the gaskets ripped when I was changing my glow plugs and I can hear it sucking air in so might as well change it while I'm in there.[/edit]

You ain't kidding! Especially as the breather/vacuum pipe underneath has about a quarter inch give to it so you're trying not to rip that off at the same time >:(
