My car has got the extra pump fitted, plumbed between the matrix and the hbv, and its plugged in electrically.
Can anyone tell me if this should work (if so what do I have to do to make it - I have no manual ) or is it a redundant system?

iirc
its part of the winter pack, to circulate coolant with the engine off, but climate on.
also circulates coolant when engine is on, but not up to temp to warm the cabin quicker.
handy after a run if someone is staying in the car a bit.

Thanks for that Jimbob.
Sadly I don't have climate, only rotary knobs and on/off switches for a/c and recirc. Try as I might I cannot achieve a combination of knob, switch and ignition positions that makes the pump work at all or the blower run when the ignition is off. Maybe it was just easier for pruduction to fit the pump and hoses to all vehicles, regardless of whether they have the winter pack/climate control or not.
Might be scope for a diy standalone circuit though, one of this dull winter afternoons. :y

I thought the Winter Pack was just for that, to warm the Cabin of the Car far quicker then normal :-?
Yes mate it should hum when working :y

I know mine had a weird fault, where its presence wasnt coded to the cliamte ecu, this caused the pump to run permanently or not at all, can;t remeber which :-[

My 99 Elite isn't fitted with one. :( :( :(

removed mine for somewhere to fit the vapourirsor for the lpg system, if we are talking about the same thing, pump bolted the wing under water bottle?
Anyway, played with it before removing to make sure i wouldnt miss it, and couldn't get it to make any odds, no matter what i did. The car knew it was there as Kevin confirmed it via tech 2 and later turned it off via tech 2 when removed.
IME, not worth the bother....? :-/

there is permenant power supplier to that pump when ignition is on. i suggest you get a multimeter on the connections to test.
In my experience the pumps get asthmatic with age. Mine only worked when cold then siezed up when it warmed up. yours could be similarly knackered

Pump u/s? Now why didn't I think of that possiblity? I'll get out there now. If it's not running it must place an unfair restrictriction on flow through the heater, me thinks.

JonathanH got it spot on.
There is power all the time, just that the pump is u/s. I stripped it down and cleaned out the junk and got it working, but it seemed laboured and clunky. Then it stopped again, but would start with a whack, now it wont start again. Maybe it will when it gets cold. Either way time to contact some breakers.
From the Bosch website it seems these pumps are mainly fitted to maintain optimum coolant flow through the matrix when at idle (eg traffic lights, m25 etc) when the belt driven pump may not be shifting enough water around. Secondary benefits are faster cabin warmup and the possibility of continued heat after shutdown, providing a suitable control circuit is in place - eg climate control with residual heat option.
Thanks all for the help.

In that case I think us lucky estate owners might just have found a use for the blank position next to the pass side heated seat switch, the one that's used for the rear sunblind.
Shouldn't be too difficult to wire up a little circuit that supplies power to the pump for say 15 mins when pressed and the ignition is off .......

mine does work, its a good idea and one i thought of many years ago, now it exists im happy with it, but if you dont need/or want it use for something else!

... or rig up a relay that links with the power feed to the HBV solenoid.
if you have manual aircon then there is a microswitch on each heater dial - when they are both set to cold the power a vac solenoid that applies vac to the HBV. VX never linked this to the aux heater pump so it still runs even on the 'full cold' setting...

boat boy..
a few years ago i had a renault 19 16v and that had a small pump similar to what you mention and that car did not have air con or anything fancy mate
it turned out that pump kicks in for roughly 5mins after switching ignition of to slowly pump the hot water around so as hot water not sitting staganant in the pipes silmilar to a turbo timer as such..
my old renault developed a a problem where the battery kept going flat and woz traced to that pump after hearing the price of a new one it woz left unplugged but never caused any issues after? :y
i have a 2001 2.6 elite now and i have the pump you mention on mine.. :-/

Ive got this pump on my manual aicon estate too and having touble with not much heat from the heater .cant feel it buzzing or anything Ive tried flushing the system out temp seems to get high enough on the dash but does take a while to get there .As far as iI can see all the pipes are hot once up to temp but still not very warm in the cabin ,could this pump being knackered stop the flow to the matrix or more likely be the matrix knackered ?
Also could it be the HBV im not loosing water so its not leaking. :y
