Title: Burnt plastic bag smell
Post by: Martin_1962 on 10 November 2009, 20:27:32
I have been getting this for a couple of days, but no smoke and it is not coming from under the bonnet.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Check your exhaust ... I've had a carrier bag get caught on it before and it stinks like mad once the system gets hot... also takes ages to go even once you rip the bag away

With the cold weather are you using anything to warm you up that you haven't used for a while? Heated seats, RHW?

Have you an oil leak? Have you had any section of the exhaust replaced recently? I had something similar, the stickers on the exhaust are burning off and one of the multiple plugs for the o2 sensor had been touching the exhaust

Oil leak has gone - doesn't smell like that anyway. Lambda plug - possibly

Haven't been playing under the bonnet since August :-/ :-/

Please check the header tank, it's plastic, my car had a crack in the top of the tank (which took ages to find), since replacing no more smell.

the plugs I'm talking about clip to the side of the gearbox, mine some how broke allowing the plug to fall and touch the exhaust

your CAT could have a hole in it they do smell funny with hole, mine the weld had a crack in it  at end off it and smelt like a plastic bag, when a new cat is fitted smells like rotten eggs and if you have a new cat fitted day before mot it will fail as new cat needs a few miles to settle.
