Post by: vauxsull on 14 November 2009, 13:49:55
Failed MOT today on corroded front brake lines.... Booked in at the same garage next Thursday to get done at a cost of £165 all in.... Is this a reasonable price anyone? He informes me you cant rub them down as your making them thinner than they already are..... :'(

Doubt they are corroded, more likely to have salt formation on them which often wipes off with a petrol soaked rag.

Seems to be a common little earner for MOT places at the minute.

If its just the brake lines then go to your local shop buy yourself a flare kit (£20 at screwfix ) a roll of brake pipe £8 and A few male and female connectors all in all say £32 for the lot. or go to a local garage and get them to make you some new pipes and fit them yourself, either way you must bleed the brakes aswell.
But personaly said £165 is steep. come to me and I will do them for £80 all in.

Took it for a pre MOT check a few weeks ago ( different garage) and he noticed the brake pipes and he said to do that which I did and the wax oiled the whole underside but this MOT station spotted them anyway..... Is it a reasonable price to do the job though?

It sounds very expensive, take the advice offered about  getting a flairing kit and some brakepipe, it is really easy to do if you use copper pipe.

Or get them made up at your local Motor factors, just take in your old pipes and they will soon make you a new set.

I've done the rear brake lines on a veccy before and with the flaring kit it was a breeze.  Just make sure when you take out the old one try not to bend it too much so you can make a replica :y
