Title: Exhaust pipe price
Post by: Squatch on 13 November 2009, 18:52:24
Evening all - well the exhaust / back box needs replacing. How much should l expect to spend replacing these items? I will fit them myself. Any advice welcome as always :)

Don't bother going to Vauxhall for a genuine exhaust. They are producing rubbish now, but still charging full price. The original system is double skinned, so nice and quiet. They now produce cheap single walled stuff. Try 'eternalcar', they seem to be the best. And as you've got a 3.2 you'll be wanting the twin tailpipe backbox. The eternalcar one's are a bit short, so you can add chrome tailpipe finishers to make it look like the original exhaust. I've used eternalcar and would use them again.
I think I spent £40 for the backbox, as far as I can remember. It's £120 for the full cat back system.

Just paid £119 for both mid sections for my 3.0 from the local factors which is supposed to be a Walker system. IIRC they quoted around £50 for the backbox.

Yep shame about the GM one's  :'( they were a good bit of kit. you could expect them to last at least five years

Recently had to change the original cat back exhaust on my 2.2 and now have Walker centre and GM rear box. Centre is noiser than original 6 year old sections that needed replacing.  >:( Rear box appears identical to original and still has slash cut chrome pipe. Did not have time to get Eternal system to try before MOT but will be changing to Eternal centre sections soon. Also ground clearance is reduced with Walkers center boxes, where as Eternal centres are similar profile to the original pillow shape units.
To be honest I now wish I'd gone GM right through as I could have at least gone back to the main stealers and complained if it had not been up to scratch...  :'(
There may be a discount available if you know someone with a trade card. :)
The cars are so quiet a noisy exhaust really messes them up.

I have mostly fitted my own exhaust systems over the last 25 years.

A few times I have fitted pattern exhausts to Vauxhalls and regretted it. Mostly I have fitted genuine GM and been pleased but I don't ever remember them being double walled. Twice as heavy perhaps....

The only system I have ever known to be double walled was on a 1979 Suzuki motorbike I once had.
