Title: ecu light
Post by: andy4775 on 20 November 2009, 13:07:25
I have a 2.2dti with which I tow a caravan and there's this really steep hill near where I live. When I try to take the car up it with the caravan on, just before I get to the top on comes the ecu light and into limp mode, not a good thing when you have over a ton of caravan behind.  Any ideas? Also If I switch the ignition off for about 10 seconds and start it again its goes off.

How many times have you done this?
Obviously mate you are well over working the engine, and it ain't going to last long under this kind of hammer. can't you go another way?, It's too much for the engine to cope with.

Could it be the gearbox overheating?

Do you hold it in a low gear to give the torque converter an easier time?

It is certainly not being 'hammered' I have changed down without over-revving and the ecu light comes on while I am still in 2nd gear and it is pulling quite well.  Thought maybe the fuel filter???  The gearbox overheating?  I will look into that thanks - although it is not that long an incline for the box to overheat and then when I switch the ignition off and on again the light stays out, wouldn't the light stay on if it the box was overheating, I don't know??        Any more ideas lads.

You have a manual so i doubt its overheating, if anything it would burn the clutch first.

I'd get the codes read, something will be stored  :y

Agreed. If it is manual then ignore my comments about gearbox overheating.

Thanks I'll get the codes read just thought there may be something that was obvious.

Does the light only come when you are towing the caravan up the hill?, or does it come on going up there without it?

It only comes on when I have the caravan on.

You say it does it in 2nd gear, have you tried it in 1st to see if the light still comes on? keeping the rev's a bit higher without over revving?
