Title: torque converter damaged.

dropped my gearbox today with the help of r1 [many thanks nigel :y] due to the massive atf leak, i found that the shaft on the torque converter has got badly damaged [g/box side], it has about a 1" groove all around it like its been machined down in a lathe :o, has anybody got any idea why this should have happened?, ive got another g/box anyway but obviously the a t/c is a write off so ive got to find one ASAP. :'( :'(

i had this on a project once, i *think* it was due to the TC not being fully pushed back into the bell housing. When replacing a TC, the back of the TC should rub against the bell housing, when fitting, the bolts pull it forward, just enough to clear it.

well tunnie the g/box has been fitted for quite a while & was fitted correctly, the damage has occured on the shaft that goes into the g/box, the damage starts around where the oilseal would make contact & continues into the box for about an inch [hope that makes sense], the oilpump looks to be in one piece so cant see it being that. :-/

Sounds like failure of the pump bush into which the torque converter nose locates. Bush can be replaced reasonably easily but the TC will need reconditioning to remove the scoring from the nose.

If the gearbox is otherwise in good condition I would get an autobox specialist to replace the bush and seal and recon the TC.

thanks kevin, ive got another g/box anyway which is a low miles one so hopefully thatll be o,k, it looks like i`ll be onto jpat on monday morning as i cant find another t/c s/hand, i dont suppose youd know if this t/c is fitted to anything else as i cant find a part number list of t/c`s anywhere :(

cheers andy H, ive at least got a part number to go by now, i`ll be phoning jpat tomorrow, ive already bought the oil seal & sump gaskets from them thinking that was what i would need, i didnt bargain for an eaten t/c though :'(,,,,,i have another AR35 to go in chris & you are correct mine is chipped, perhaps i gave the g/box that came out a bit too much welly last sunday. ::) ::)
