Title: DIS and Cam covers - what else?

Hi there,
My 99 3L auto estate has just started to misfire. I thought it was the damp weather, but I guess it's more serious  :( Lumpy idle and feels like it's running on 5. Checked passenger side plugs and there is a bit of oil in the plug holes, so I guess the cam covers are knackered and the DIS is probably on the way out. Mileage - Its just turned 100k.
Question, should I replace the cam covers, the plugs and the DIS pack. Whilst I am doing this, anything else worth doing while it's in bits? Also any advice on sourcing the DIS unit - are there alternative suppliers to genuine VX that anyone can recommend?

Finally - how long to complete (half day, whole day, more?)

I have printed out the various maintanance guides that look really useful.

Camcover gaskets deffo knackered. Prior to replacing stuff willy nilly I`d suggest `clipping it first to see if you have any fault codes http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1189022687

I would go for one of the original Bosch dis packs off Ebay, they go for about £80, might also be worth doing the plug leads while your there again Bosch ones off Ebay ;)

Spark plugs are cheap, change them first.

Leads & dis pack don't generally flag up error codes because the ECU has no way of monitoring the high tension side.

I know that Volkswagen's identify misfires by sensing crankshaft rotation and can tell you which cylinder(s) are misfiring. I don't know if Tech 2 can see similar information for the Omega :-/

I had a very similar episode starting last Sunday,and was well documented in a previous thread.
On closer inspection it turned out to be spark plugs which were all replaced and car now runs perfectly again....its the cheapest fix first..I have a known working dispack here with "oval plug"should you trace it to that,which you can have for a few £,s plus postage if required.

Looks like you have similar problems to those I had. When I changed the cam cover gaskets I found there had been internal leakage into the spark plug wells, but there was no problem with the engine running. At the time I changed the plugs anyway as they had done about 50k miles.

I had the mis-fire a couple of months later, just fixed, and it was the DIS pack. Seems like 10 years is about the life of the cam cover gaskets and the DIS pack.

Depends on how fast you work but it took me about 3 hours to do the DIS pack and it probably helped that I had done the cam covers recently as I was reasonably familiar with the bits that had to be removed. Also I prefer to take care and get it right rather than rush it. I managed to get the DIS pack off without taking the Heater Bypass valve off and draining the water system, which had been recommended for access.

Update. - Spent some of Sunday on this (had to postpone from Saturday to fix the central heating!). Decided to do cam covers and plugs first. All going well, following the maintenance guides, except I cannot see 6 bolts holding on the injector rails. I can see 4, 2 each side inside the injector assembly - any hints on where I can find the other 2?

Also, I have been told that the DIS could be one of 3 types, is there any way I can determine which one it is, short of actually taking it off?

My recollection is that the early ones were bolted to the back of the head and that there were two types (with either rectangular or oval plug).
Later ones were mounted on a shelf (part of the engine lifting eye) and the plug changed again because it pointed in a different direction. (I might be wrong about that bit, it might be the same as one of the above DIS packs)
