mechanic coming for my car tommorow i just want an idea how much it will cost me noticed hg kits on ebay for 25.00 but do i insist on genuine parts i just want a ball park figure i'm not used to handing my car over to someone

i missed your other posts, are you sure its HG?

Depends on the labour, some have paid as little as £250, others £900!

If your handy with the tools, have a go yourself. There is plenty of room in the 2.2 bay, its quite straight forward.

Only use genuine GM parts otherwise you'll be doing it again.  :y

Head Gasket should be a pretty reasonable job. I've used one of the head kits off eBay for a Rover a few years ago and it was fine. However the general consensus seems to be genuine parts only and I'd believe the expertise on here over my own any time :y

It is a very methodical job but not difficult - the only odd tool you'll need a torque wrench (unless there's anything funny on an Omega that I don't know about)

Remember you need to buy head bolts as well as the gasket itself - sometimes they come in the kit but not always.

I've never been to a garage in my life really but £25 and £250 - 10times the price at the cheapest!

mechanic took car yesterday and told me 6 hours labour £180
head skim £30.00
compression check £30.00
plus whatever parts are now the only concern is this head skimming is this the norm is he doing the job prperly or doing something not needed ?

I'd say he's doing it properly, head skimming will make sure it's dead flat to alleviate the headgasket going again due to warping.

it only needs skimming if it actually over heated, was it run hot?

no the oposite if anything it was still running fine only rough on tickover

I think his mechanic is just making sure all points are covered.
