I saw this How to Tunnie but nothing in it on manualy checking the level

you can't check it, only way to check is to change it. Unless you have issues with it, or its a limited slip, its not worth touching really.

I have stains under the car presumably from diff oil but not sure.

you can check  with a bendy straw, but only good to see if its up on oil. and how good it feels in your fingers. :y

Not technically "checking", I suppose, but it does the job.
