Title: Tyres
Post by: cleggy on 26 November 2009, 15:20:46
I know that this has probably been done to death, but I would like your opinions on tyre choice for my 2001 Facelift Estate. It is currently is shod with Marangoni 225/55 R 16 95V, and they will soon require replacing.
My criteria is GRIP ( both wet, and dry), RIDE ( smoothness) LONGEVITY ( I only do around 5K a year), and finally COST ( max £100 per corner fitted).
What would you choose, and why?

But if grip is an issue, perhaps Mr DTM isn't the best to ask......... He's not known as the Crash Test Dummy for nothing ::) ::) :D :D :D

not got any posts to loose have you lazydocker? I think admins could fine more suitable punishments!  ;D

I am pleased overall with falkins on mine, they do tramline more than previous rubber. Espeically when the rears went on, the front were Falkins for ages and were fine. Rears went on (different model) got tad worse.

On the upside they are super silent, and done 10k on the fronts already and hardly look used  :o

Grip is good in the wet, and i spend 90% of my miles on the motorway so they suit my needs.

I did a blast back from Hemel around the lanes, they still grip fine, and had no tramlining what so ever, it seams its only on certain road cambers  :-/

KU31's get good reviews. Considering a set for my second car as the pricing is very good.

Falken FA452 on the rear, ZE912's on the front.

Had no real issues with the fronts, tram lining got a lot worse when the rears went on  :-/

80+ down the lanes going to Hemel the other day felt fine  :-/

With the millage i do, i might as well get my use out of them, i'll have to replace them late next year anyway

I always used to fit the Michelin Primacy which I think was factory fit. Prices got stupid so after discussion with local tyre guys went for Dunlop sp3000 which have been absolutely fine so far.
Falkens are on Signum and also seem fine ZE912s.

Mind you I do not do high speeds down back lanes.

I've just got four Falken ZE912s at WIM, they couldn't recommend them enough. I figure they wouldn't do that if they were no good.

I am happy overall with mine, ours would be on 16" though, maybe there is a difference with 17" Falkens, which makes them worse  :-/

Dave,

I have a full set of 225 55 R 16W Dunlop SP Sport Fast Response available that are currently fitted to my 51 plate 2.6 cdx saloon. They have done less than 100 miles. If you're interested feel free to pm me. :y Car is soon to be scrapped (it's a long story)  :'( :'(

I've got ZE912's , good on the motorway but now that they are about 2/3 worn the lateral grip in damp conditions has fallen away. They were great when new and only lightly worn.

I would say the Falkens are a risky choice. Plenty of other tyres to choose from. They certainly aren't the grippiest tyres although they are reasonably quiet. They do wander, though, IMHO.
