Title: no heating
Post by: omega trev on 16 November 2009, 19:39:23
hey all
im having a few probs with the heating in the old elite, im not getting hot air from the vents in the car even tho both the alloy pipes off the matrix are hot, ive tried the reset (off and auto buttons pressed same time) and the little vent is still sucking the air in. now for the strange bit, if i take the vac pipe off the hbv valve and then replace it straight away the air in the cabin does get slightly warmer! i wouldnt have thought the hbv was at fault as both of the matrix pipes are hot, any ideas anyone?

Sounds like to me that all the vac pipes have been put on the wrong way round. Have you had/done any work to the engine which you would need to remove any of the vac pipes?

Does it work if you press the Eco switch? My old Elite only seemed to blow hot air in Eco mode for some reason

Did you use Radweld any time recently (or before it happened)?
As far as I know heating rad gets blocked by it before the main radiator gets sealed...

eco switch on or of makes no difference at all mate and as far as rad weld is concerned i havnt used it but cant say it hasnt been used before, the vac pipes are working fine as far as i can see, vac on when set to cold no vac when set for heat as i said the two alloy pipes to and from the matrix are both hot so im at a complete loss as to why i have no heat :(

I don't think it's air locked as I wouldnt be getting hot water in and out of the matrix or am I wrong

Hmmmm....can you try flushing the matrix through with a hose pipe.

Do you get hot air on either side (passenger or drivers)

no hot air on either side mark, it was flushed out back in april and i wasnt using the heater then, i got the car in feb so im not sure the heating has ever worked since ive owned it :( if i was only getting hot water through the matrix inlet and the outlet was cold it would point to blocked matrix but to be getting both pipes hot and still no heat at the vents is a bit baffleing!

You have to consider that the water will conduct the heat through such a short section quite quickly....and hence both pipes can still feel hot.

This all sounds horribly familiar!! I've just changed my HBV and flushed the matrix and all I've achieved is to warm the air up from ambient to tepid!! I'm waiting to see if a few days motoring percolates any air out of the system.

Hope i'm not hijacking your thread, but same problem.
Heater was working fine then some weeks ago started getting cooler until now,  'nothing warm'. My mate changed the hbv at my insistance although he said the old one was working perfectly, which it was. Today he flushed out the matrix with a hosepipe, the water ran out immediately and was clean, still no joy. The top hose to the matrix seems to be getting warm/hot, but the bottom one feels cold ? What I have found confusing is, whatever steady speed I travel at there is just cold air at the vents, 'but', gun the old girl for a few seconds and we get warm air, turn on the fan and it just gets progressively colder, but if I drive erratically by continually gunning the engine, we get warm air almost continuously ??  As my Son was really cheesed off continually rubbing the ice off the inside of the screen on the school run today, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.  ;)
