Title: Headgasket or no?
Post by: RobG on 02 December 2009, 18:07:07
Further to my threads re heating/coolant loss. Done some more fettling. Initial start-up........lumpy for about 15secs than OK. Engine idling with coolant cap OFF.......coolant moving. With cap ON...........run for 10mins.........switch off..........wait a few minutes then release cap.............coolant bubbles up to near top of tank. When smelling the tank it reeks of exhaust/fuel. Is it the head gasket :question

2 classics signs, so afraid. Yes.  :'(

Coolant leaks into the cylinders, and while there causes the engine to run lumpy, until its burned off.

Its a much easier job than the V6 though  :)

Biggest cause of HG failure is old coolant, although they do tend to pop at around 170k anyway (on 4 pots)
