Title: Auto box car blues !!... No 2nd gear in LHM
Post by: Steve 1564 on 04 December 2009, 19:21:58
Hi Guys...
Apart from the cam cover (which ain't too bad now in comparison) the autobox has just given up !! (showing 102k)
Off to wales today - all fine but there was a twisty bit (about 15miles) on the way to tregaron, was'nt driving hard at all (unusual for me) the box was going up & down happily, then when in second it felt like it was stuck there (engine breaking)... lumpy changes then after i stopped & restarted - no drive !! after going up & down the box it goes into limp home mode (this gives me 1st & 3rd)
when up to 50 or so switch of the ign & restart (LHM goes off) I get 1st 3rd & 4th... second just slips (but no drive at all if you stop)... drove nearly 200 miles in LHM box got very (VERY) hot - smells like burning plasticene.... is it dead (and did i kill it ?)
going to top it up in the morning & see -
When in LHM should you be able to select 1-2-3-D cos when i tried i got 1=1 2=3 3=3 D=3 is that right ?
Also can you read the GB codes with an elm tool ?
(let me know if i'm becomming a pain  :o)

Thanks again -
Steve

Did the car with the spanner light up?

You say that it was giving you 1st and 3rd is that manually changing them or was it more like the revs were being limited?

Not sure on your code reader  but getting it read would help diagnosis. Only time will tell if its dead im sure the more knowledgable ones will be along shortley :y

IIRC limp mode only gives you 2nd when you manually select 1 or 2, and 3rd when you manually select 3 or D

... yeah thought so
when the "Check" light is on
If i manually selecting i get :-
select 1 get 1
select 2 get 3
select 3 get 3
drive is 3
Note : i had to manually select 1 to get it   when in LHM it tried (bugger on a hill) to take off in 3rd

Oh and no rev (just a little bit from slip)
Just the check light on the cid... no EML.. and the car still reves to r/l
If i switch of the ign (and restart at speed (50+)) then 1st 3rd & 4th work normally - 2nd just slips  and i dont know about reverse cos if i stop you loose drive alltogether...

Update --
Checked fuses, OK & checked selector switch... (cleaned)

put nearly 3lts of atf in !! and as i feared no 2nd gear ! and it sounds like a friction toy, very clonky & bangy (feels like its locking up at low speed)
the stuff that came out was very smelly & almost black - 200 miles in LHM is not the best idea i've had in a while !
... droped sump -- lots of filings and a few chunks ! (looked like wooly willie !) (always keep a neodidium magnet in your wallet.... handy for stuff like that & saves me running up the credit cards
As they say up north " Box 'ne moor"

.... hopefully picking up a box sunday - AR25 again & will treat it to new filter & fluid... guess i'd better flush the cooler as well - Ugh !
