I have just bought a year 2000 Omega 2.5td GLS with 135,000 mls.
There is a rattle / cyclic noise from engine which changes as the revs change.
I investigated today with tube onto ear touching various parts of running engine !!
It sounds to me like it may be a camshaft rattle as it is loudest at the housing just infront of the oil filler.
Can anyone tell me if there is a bearing at this end of the cam that is prone to wear?
Is it an easy job or not to fix?
Cheers, BP

oh oh!!! just infront of the oil filler housing is the timing chain, the guides do wear if oil changes are neglected, which allows the chain to slap around, chains and guides are available and the job can be done without rmoving cylinder head but if its really noisy would do it soon!! only other thing it might be is the hyddraulic timing chain tensioner is sticking or not reaching far enough?

Thanks for such a quick reply.
Is there a way to check for timing chain tension / setting and wear without major striping off of parts?
Cheers. BP

I'm not very familiar with the Omega yet but from previous experience - I wouldn't let your timing chain fail completely! I'd get it sorted sharpish :y

Probably sounds thus: ck - ck - ck - ck - ck ?
Particularly noticeable when the engine's on the over-run.
Before delving further, I'd remove the viscous fan and aux drive belts, then run the engine to see if the noise disappears. This'll eliminate the auxiliaries.

In a nutshell - no.
If I remember correctly, you'll need to remove the timing-case (and associated gubbins), and lower the sump onto the subframe. Then you should be able to see what's what, so to speak.
Omegatoy has delved deeper than I on this - try a 'PM' to him.

don't run for long with no aux belt - no waterpump!

worth checking aux tensioner
-
is it a constant ck ck (i.e. is it like every 1 second) does it get faster if you rev the engine?
-
As i have put in the title of the posting the noise apears to be cyclic ie, not every rev, but increases with the revs, if you know what I mean.
It may be something that is related to just one cylinder (so the noise appears every sixth rev.)
Or related to a point on the flywheel or something ??
It is difficult to pinpoint.
I may try to record it and put a link on a reply so people can listen to it.

As someone has sugested, i will try a quick engine run without the belts to prove it is none of the aux.
Will try to get round to that early this week.
Cheers again for the help.

I have recorded the engine noise and posted onto youtube. Click the link below to listen....

Any comments or ideas on what it is, would be appreciated.
Cheers, BP.

Sound very much line a bearing in a tensioner or aux item (power steering pump, water pump or Air con pump) to me.

PMSL ;D ;D so its not only my 2.5td that souds like that ;D ;D

Mine doesn't :P

hearing that, my first investigation would be around tensioner, as previously suggested.

Quick update !!!
I have removed the aux belt and ran engine for a minute... :)
The noise remains :-[ :-[
So this eliminates any aux items and tensioners. The tensioners felt ok just spinning them with the belt off.
Any further ideas?

After further investigation, turns out to be worn / poor fuction hydraulic lifters causing noise :(
What is the best price to buy the lifters online? (have found site at £22 each currently)
I kow you would be best changing all 12, but would it be so bad if I just changed the baddly worn ones??
Cheers, BP

IF it is the lifters then a dose of wynns lifter treatment is worth a go

Final UPDATE.....
Just got the car back from a mechanic friend, and it sounds as sweet as :) :)
Changed all 12 lifters ... £180 for bits, and £180 labour + new oil and filter.
Most of the lifter were stiff, but a couple were locked solid and worn on the top surface, so that was definately the problem noise.
I don't think the Wynn's would have sorted them, but you never know. Better to change them I think.
Let's hope no more problems for a bit :y

pleased for you mate glad you got it sorted :y

Old topic I know but your video shows the exact same problem I've been having for some time now. No mechanic I saw was able to determine the origin of the problem so thanks!
Has the fix been durable then?
Again, many thanks!

Job done. Noise gone! :y
