the 1997 motor runs fine but the tranny is bad, the 2001 motor is having all kinds of trouble but the tranny is good. I was wondering if it would be easier for me to just swap the motors. would I have any big problems doing that if i also swapped the computers in them?
I just cannot find the vac leak or whatever it is causing me so much grief for the last 2 years and its just getting worse.

what is the hole problem? is it just an air leak?

Ok I dont know what the problem is however this is where it all started.
I had to change the valve cover gaskets because it was leaking oil on the exhaust manifold. After doing that the car ran ok however it surged rpms while at idle from like 800 to 2200 rpm.
I thought it was a vac leak but went though it several times and sprayed everything down several times with wd40 and starter fluid. I could not get the engine to idle any differently while doing this and cant find a vac line off or broke. I still dont know if its this because it sure seems like it but i cant find it!
Now my battery needed replaced so i got a new one put it in and it reset my codes.
Well the car is idling very bad now and it takes a good 20 minutes of turning it back on after it stalls to finally get it to stay running. It will stay running but idles at around 400 rpm.
I did put a tester on it and one time it showed my maf sensor on it. But after clearing the codes again and trying to find a vacuum leak the maf sensor code hasnt come back. However I am getting codes for random multiple cylinder misfires on 1,2,3,5.
I cant figure out what to do I dont have the money to replace till i get it right.
maf sensor?
throttle position sensor?
idle position sensor?
and whatever else it could be.
Any ideas?

What size engine is in the 2001 car?
-
3.0 v6, however i did read somewhere else that i might have problems swapping different years because they changed alot of sensors and the orientation that the positive and negative are on the plugs
-
sounds like the random codes of the camsensor fault, some time fault codes come up like this and it is the camsensor, it maybe nearly on its way out, has this before, and so have a lot on here, somtimes it will come up with cam sensor fault and a few otheres and somtime it dose not, puts engine in limp home mode and cut most of the sencors off, would change te sensor and it should be back to normal again. :y

Firstly do the pedal trick (see below for instructions) and post all the codes you get. My money would be on crank sensor personally.

I have my own actron obd II autoscanner thats giving me the codes, do i still need to do the paper clip test?
-
have you had the phlenum off since you did cam covers it sounds like its not sealed correctly with the large o rings but someone more knowledgable will be along shortly
reason i am saying this the first time i took the plenum off i didnt reseat it correctly and got your exact symptoms

No I havnt maybe thats what I should do!

Exactly my thoughts. Revs rising is classic air leak symptoms ime and the black o ring seals moving when re fitting are quite common as they stick to the plenum while your trying to line up the location pegs. Re trace steps, checking all parts are seated correctly including the inlet manifold under plenum to black plstic wedge. May well give you a maf code if you have a bad air leak there i guess? Also check the idle controle valve is seated correctly, but from pictures i've seen of the catera engine bay you may not have one.....? Or at least its slightly different to the uk set up?
Rusty is talking about the crank sensor, cam sensor is fairly bullet proof on the v6.
I would do the paper clip test as well just to double check what your reader is telling you. Have had snap on and others give miss leading info.
Cam cover (or valve cover) leak is common due to blocked breathers(and eventually age). Breathers need cleaning out at least every 2 years. Far more often imho if the car does a lot of short journeys due to mayo in the system. If the covers leak, eventually the spark plug wells will fill with oil and miss fires will follow. All covered by guides in maintenance section. Hth

With the engine running lightly spray all around the plenum with carb cleaner, when the engine note changes THAT is where the vac leak is !!
The carb cleaner gets sucked in and acts like extra unmetered fuel.
Once you've found the leak, wipe down with paper towel .. result ... problem diagnosed and a nice clean enegine ... :y :y :y
