Title: V6 DIS Query
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 06 December 2009, 21:30:26
I've never been unfortunate enough to have one fail so far, hence haven't needed to buy one.

What is the view on aftermarket DIS packs - do they do the job, or are they to be avoided, using only Bosch items?

Input appreciated as ever  :)

can't imagine they will be that cheap brand new as pattern, considering they rarely fail, is it not worth getting a known good one off one of the better breakers here?

Not seen many fail! Lots of references to them possibly failing but its always another reason.

They do fail. The 3 coils inside rust, expand & make a bid for freedom from the plastic casing.  :y

And? Visual inspection test is fine, get a cheap one from a known breaker. We had 2.0 that did 130k in 3 years, the 3.0 Elite's DIS is fine. Its never been changed and its 10 years old.

James has never had one fail, and lets face it, he has had a LOT of V6 Omegas.  ;D

Given proper maintenance, they rarely fail.

2 sides to this

yep - seen lots where they "expand" past the plastic..... it looks terrible, but I've done thousands of miles with DIS packs like that and never had a misfire  ::)

The current V6 one is like that, and I know it's had water ingress.

Bosch ones on ebay are about £70 - pattern about £37 - just wondered if this is actually a part whereby it's imperative to get genuine / OEM etc...

Once exposed it's going to rust more & faster ..... and then fail!  ;)

Yes Andy... if thats what you want to do.

Me? i'd be making sure the scuttle is doing its job and not pouring water onto the DIS & plugs.

But if you want to get out the polish be my guest.

Blimey, this is getting as bad as my fishing forum! For what it's worth, I've had two Bosch dispacks fail on a car that has done 130k. The last one only did 45k. Both looked fine externally. I've put a cheapo pattern one on this time although to me it looks identical in every way externally to the Bosch one, just no numbers. Only done about 500 miles and it seems fine, guess time will tell.

I changed a dis yesterday that was in a bad way. The car was mis-firing and a new dis pack solved the problem. I have seen a few faulty dis packs.

I think I would have to consider if 1, I could afford a Bosch one and 2, am I keeping the car. If the answer is yes then I would buy Bosch.
