iv got a 1994 3.0 auto, this morning it ran out of petrol so after my old man brought me a gallon to get me going i had just set off to the garage to stick some more in and i noticed automatic gearbox on the trip computer and the traction control light came on on the dashbord lights, the car seemed to lose power as if it was in limp mode but when i pull up and turn the engine off and restart it all looks fine until i accelerate again and then it all starts again, i put a k&n on it 3 days ago apart from that its standard, theres no engine managment lights on or anything as yet, any help would be appreciated, many thanks

Check 'auto' fluid level first, how many miles since the fluid was changed, if the answer is over 70k and/or never, it's the first low cost thing to sort.

Cone filter? If so, I bet the engine loves all that horrible hot air being sucked into it!
It wouldn't surprise me if the fuel lines or filter are full of crud (happens when fuel level gets too low), the ECU detects low fuel pressure and when you stick yer clog down, it bangs itself into limp mode.
You might need to blow the fuel lines through and/or stick a new fuel filter on.
As Richard says - might pay to get 'box fluid renewed too.

cheers mate, iv put the original filter back on now and it doesnt seem to go in limp mode now so i may be wrong in thinking that it was messing up the mixture or something and putting it in limp mode but it does seem to be better now, the k&n filter wasnt for an omega i just kinda made it fit so it wasnt plugged into the maf, correct me if im wrong but could this possibly be the cause of it going into limp mode
-
just cured a fault on mine, after fitting new box (which was knacked)still had box in limp mode.code reader said maf sensor so i fitted a new one and job sorted.the maf sensor communicates with the electrics on an automatic telling it when to change gear, hope this helps :)

It won't help mate the omega really dosn't like anything other than the GM panel filter. The oil coating on the K and N filters can bugger up the MAF sensor IIRC :y
-
thanks guy's for all your advice, im just gonna cross my fingers and see how it goes until after xmas and then i'll treat it to a full service including gearbox oil :y :y :y
-
Can the MAF be cleaned with a spray of some sort as i fitted a Piper cross air filter element to mine and have since had gearbox(auto)problems which weren't there before, don't know if this is causing it as not heard of this diagnosis before but would gladly fit a standard filter if it cures it :-/.

What Does The Air Flow Sensor Do?
The air flow sensor converts the amount of air drawn into the engine into a voltage signal, the vehicles electronic control unit needs to know the air intake air volume to be able calculate engine load in order to determine how much fuel to inject, when to ignite the cylinder, and for automatic vehicles when to shift the transmission
-
thats what made my mind up to purchase a new sensor, problem solved.id tried cleaning the old one by sprayin brake cleaner on it but no joy,i suppose carb cleaner would be same

i put the original air filter back on and it seemed to cure the auto box fault more or less instantly, problem is iv seemed to have damaged a head gasket i think as now the oil cap is full of mayo, iv had nothing but problems with it since iv been messing around so iv just bought a 1999 2.5 cdx to replace it and im going to put all my elite extra's on it and leave the engine bay alone this time ;)

Is this the only thing that makes you think head gasket, oil cap being full of mayo isn't uncommon if doing lots of short trips and using shite oil. :y
-
Mayo in the filler neck is nothing to worry about,it is because the car has been doing short journeys. The oil/moisture mixes at the top of the filler neck and isnt getting burnt off because the engine isnt running for long enough to do so. :y
edit; must type faster. ::)

interestin thread re maf, filters and auto box.
Just to add maf is very sensative to cleaning i'm told due to the coating on the heated element within it. Carb and brake cleaner will kill a maf, something far less volatile was recommended by Mark Dtm, something like that foaming computer cleaner.
However i'm not sure how good at cleaning that can be when it comes to oil from a panel or cone filter.
So in short, cone or panel filter, if oiled to catch small particles will kill a maf on these engines afaik and probably most other engines as well.

Not head gasket. Short journeys. Filler neck sits in colder air away from the engine. Condensation forms thats not burned off on a short journey and over time it builds up to give mayo on the neck.
Also be aware though, that your breathers will be in a very similar state, so will need cleaning out more often to save blown cam cover gaskets, oil in plug wells, missfires, new leads and all that agro.

Glad i found that out then,as i was stick a k&n panel filter in mine. :y

There's really no point as the surface area of a Vauxhall filter is just as good if not better. If you want more boy racer noise (induction noise) drill some holes in the bottom of the air box.

If you want more boy racer noise (induction noise) drill some holes in the bottom of the air box
Wouldn't that feed the engine with warm air (performance killer)?

Yep, same as cone filters
-
i have a sealed bmc carbonfiber induction filter sucking cold air from the existing air filter in let covered just over 5000 miles and no problems

Done that in the past pete, just makes it sound better really plus i aint 17 anymore unfortunatly. :D ;D :y

eeh yer learn somat everyday so il never blast brake cleaner at a maf again :y
