In the three years I have had mine all she has needed to pass the first MOT was a tyre worn on the inside and a bulb. Both other times she sailed through.
If you keep your car serviced and do regular weekly checks there should be no nasty surprises at testing time.  ;)

well  I think th MOT god is a bit random.  for the last 3 MOTs I've had 2 advisory notes on wishbone bushes  but on the latest test, a clean sheet.  AND the test has always been done at the same garage....

well done on your clean pass

My omega passed the MOT a few weeks back, just had some advises on the rear shocks (slight oil misting) and exhaust (back box 'deteriorated' ?).

However I was sure there would be something about the rear suspension as I have been hearing a strange noise from the rear nearside suspension for a week or so before the MOT.

It's not so much a knock as a soft 'thump' when going over bumps - but not every bump, it seems to be only certain bumps.  Not always big bumps either. And it's not the usual suspension 'noise' that you get.

At first I though it might be something in the boot - loose spare wheel, but I've checked the strap is tight on the spare and made sure that nothing else is loose in the boot.

My though is turning towards the main suspension bush, as I am not aware of any isues in the car's handling.

Any thoughts? (apart from 'what a crap problem description'!)

check the coil springs, top and bottom because they often break close to the end of the spring- look carefully because they can be missed for the MOT

My springs were doing the same so changed them along with the shocks I  still get the exhaust clipping some of these dreaded humps though, some of the humps are far too big.
