Title: brake light switch
Post by: sneakypenguin on 10 December 2009, 12:59:58
afternoon everyone, quick question about the brake light switch. For months now the interlock system on the gearbox hasn't worked (press brake to release the lever out of park) and I suspect it has something to do with the bls. I know it's located above the brake pedal but is there a guide somewhere that will show how to do it in idiot proof steps?

many thanks

There's no idiot's guide that I know of  :-/, but it's quite straight forward to change. A new brake light switch sorted the same problem out on my car ...... I embarassed myself too many times at the lights when I couldn't shift out of Park!  :-[   ;D  ;D

Look at this guide, I put some photos of the brake light switch in there with a few words on fitting them:

Make sure the stealer gets you a switch with four contacts and dont be tempted to push in the plunger until it is fitted.

I'm new to auto's, why do you shift into park when waiting at lights? As I said it's all new to me ::)

Depends how long you are going to be waiting:

Sitting in D with the footbrake on is working the engine/transmission (not very hard admittedly ..but it is working it) and blinding everyone behind you.

Sitting in D with the hand brake on works the engine/transmission but is friendlier to those behind you.

Sitting in P with the hand brake on allows the engine/transmision to have a rest, reduces fuel usage, blinds no-one and is altogether a relaxing moment .. :)

Handbrake on, slip it into N. That way there is no flash of reversing lights to frighten the driver behind as you go from P to D.
