my 2001 catera has no back brakes but my emergency brake works fine. Just wondering if anyone has encountered this problem before.

Your rear brakes are made up of a disc for your foot break brake  ;) and your emergency/handbrake is a drum in the middle ie clicky (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-OMEGA-2-0-94-MINTEX-REAR-BRAKE-DISCS-MDC867_W0QQitemZ370292283201QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item563723d741)
It could be that the rear pads are siezed in their calipers .....  but you're only really going to know when you strip them down.  :y  :y I'd guess your rear discs are vented.

Strip the pads out and give the calipers a good clean up....you may find that the pads are low and are siezed in place which sudgests its been stood for a while at some point

I replaced my rear discs/drums, pads and h/brake shoes last week. The old pads have been on there for the 20k miles I've had the car, and no idea when the previous owner changed them. The strange thing is they were hardly worn.
Almost no difference between the old pads and the new ones.  :-?

I don't think the back brakes do much, when I got mine MOT'd the hand brake was about the same as the foot brake on the gauge, thats with new disks and VX pads
