Don't have any right now but have a proposal for any member with higher knowledge and a little will to write it down and it can be moved in maintenance or general information sections.
Maybe a small table or just two columns to identify steering and handling problems.
For instance.....

Yeah I know JimBob its not always a clearcut but if you know all the most possible reasons in one place you can check and discard them more easily.

I kind of agree with Mathew, as it will still give you some direction or at least the major components to commence your investigations, especially when you possess no knowledge. At least you will have a starting point.
In addition the maintenace guide for the steeing idler does mention that tramlining is a symptom.

yes, but tramlining can be caused by several other things too.
tyre choice
tyre wear
tyre size
tyre pressure
tyre sidewalls
suspension issues
etc etc etc
feel free to try and come up with a chart, if its of use, it could go in the faq section.

have to agree with the above, its never as simple as this problem, then this is the answer, lot of other factors is in. We would need a more indepth description listing most likey issues

hitting curbs dont help, wheel berrings, pump worn, meany more things can make handling problems even throwing a weight.

add to the list,
a brand new car direct from the factory with new tyres all set up correctly with no faults. It will still tram line to a degree.
However i fully appreciate the frustration involved with getting these cars to go in a straight line. But if you have tyres that are inherantly prone to wander it wont matter what you do to the car.
Personally i think a tyre review thread as a "sticky" at the top of general car chat would help, and a basic description of "set up procedure" as is so often mentioned on here would be helpfull. Ie, check all suspension and steering parts for faults, set up for full geomeric alignment then fit new tyres.
Even with good tyres, if the car set set up is out and then corrected within a tyres life on the car, then the tyres will still carry the effect and ware caused by the previous set up until they are replaced. The damage will have been done. It is, as we say, a right bugger.

i know of only one type of tyre that stop tram lining and they are £200 each they are angal tyers, racing cars use them. cheapest pair seen was £280. but they not worth buying for normal roads.
