Title: Getting spare key cut
Post by: Neil_MV6 on 10 December 2009, 13:04:47
I've just received a new blank key blade for a spare and need to get it cut.

:question Will any key cutting place be able to do it or does it require an Auto-lock-specialist?  :question

Cheers
Neil

Any key cutter can cut them but if you already have a blank key take it to Timpson and they will cut it for free as they aren't supplying the blade.

My local shoe repair / key cutting shop did a blank for me, but wouldn't charge me because there was a high risk of error and he could ruin my blank........it worked perfectly!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

EDIT: beaten to it by the above post...............and yes it is a Timpson branch! :D :D ;) ;)

last time i got a key cut i had to repeat about 10 times i had the ability to program the key. They kept saying it won't work, there is no transponder in it. I just kept saying i know, all i want is the darn key cut!

TSSST!

Timpsons charged me £5, said there was no guarante ,blah, blah and it doesn't work.

You can clearly see he has taken too much off. Gotta now buy a new blade and try somewhere else i suppose.

£12 wasted so far.  :(

Pillocks! As they made the cock up they should do another for free. After all it was supposed to be true copy wasn't it? Give them the waffle about trading standards, it may work. Probably a crap operator as they pay them buttons anyway and anyone can be a so called Timson expert! GudLuk

Got blank blade + transponder chip off ebay (~£7).  Local friendly locksmith laser cut it FOC and TB Tech2ed it.  Works fine.

Well Neil I think that was real bad luck and you happened to come across one of Timpson's weakest links!! :'( :'( :'(

I am sure there is a notice up in their branches advertising they will cut your own blank key for free, and as at my local Timpson branch they do not charge, but you accept the risk with your blank.   I would go back and see the manager and suggest that they have made a mistake in charging you as per company policy!  At the very least you should get your £5 back!! ;) ;)
