Post by: The Red Baron on 18 December 2009, 14:12:20
3.0l elite, not ran it for a few weeks, started her up fine, after a minute or so it sounds like a machine gun going off. took aux belt off & its still there. deffo metal on metal sound. top end.
does this sound like pistons & valves having a conversation guys?. :(

I would take the cam cover off and check cam belt/tensioners. My old man phoned me and said his MV6 was making a tappety noise, turned out the tensioner was in melt down :o

Exhaust gasket leak can sound remarkably like this.

Normally an exhaust manifold leak starts off noisy and gets quieter not the other way around.

Agreed, sounds like a loud ticking which is engine RPM dependant & gets quieter as the engine warms up eventually stopping completely

update paul, doesnt make any noises until it fires up, no noise when its wound over. this points to the lifters to me, what do you think.?

Could be. Does it sound as bad as the green one did when running?

is it one or both sides ?

if you let it run, does the tone of the noise change as the oil warms up ?

its a heavier noise than the green one was, darent leave it running long enough to hear which side.

A pint says it's the lifters :)

I'd drop the oil for some fresh, pop a new filter on, and let it run up to temperature.

2.6 seems the most prone, in my experience, for some reason!

Bugger!  :'(

Was it a GM kit that was on it before?

Seeing a lot of failures recently, tensioner on mine got very, very noisey, only 27k old too  >:(
