can anyone help please, returned from weekend away with out the car, started up drove about 10 mile parked on driveway ( light snow on ground, temp about -1.5 c) all ok. After about 1 1/2 hours got in started up but noticed that the rev counter and speedo not functioning, switched off and started up again and I noticed both needles gave a small jump then just remained static, as I was driving tried the average speed indicator on the small screen and that showed speed if regularly reset so i could get to 28mph and set criuse control ok. At one point the gearbox warning came on but did not affect the driving, I again switched the ign off and after a min or so started the car but speedo/rev counter still u s most greatful of any help or suggestions the car is a 3ltr v6 elite saloon 1999 pre facelift

Sounds like the ABS ECU has failed, a fairly common problem
You can send them off to be refurbed, or can swap for a known good one.
they do hold varient coding of engine size and gearbox type, so try an get one the same, or get connected to a good diag computer for reprogramming.

Would the ABS ECU stop the tachometer working?
Is there a separate fuse for the instrument cluster?
Has anything else stopped working?
I seem to remember this issue being raised a few months ago but I cannot remember what the fix was :-/

It might be worth ensuring that everything has dried out before you take any drastic action. I've had a couple of similar instances when water got where it shouldn't!

ABS only affects speedo, not tacho as well. Press firmly on the panel right between the dials, do NOT "jerk", but a smooth, gentle, but firm push. If the connection on the back of the panel has come loose this might just reseat it. Obviously don't push so hard as to break the plastic front !!!
Might just save having to take the panel out to reseat the plug.. :)

when mine did that other night-6c pulled the plug off the speed sencor, it was cloged with ice, actually all the sencors under the engine and gear box were all frozen up.

Unlikely to be ABS ECU - does not affect tacho! Also op says cruise working ok.
breaked abs ecu gives ABS & TC lights on, no abs, no tc, no speedo, no cruise, affects power steering (more effort required).

Hi everyone thanks for the suggestions. in answer to some of the comments all other things seem to work ok lights radio etc, no tc light on no batt warning light on and criuse control still functions and I can set a speed on it by resetting the average speed screen and I have checked the accuracy of this by a local school speed check sign. where is the sensors that have been mentioned for sending the data for the speedo and revs would I have to physically crawl under the car to get at them to try and dry them out and seal them. the steering seems normal (power assist ok )
thanks once again for all your help

I'm with Entwood on this one. The symptoms don't point to there being a problem with wheel sensors or bad connections under the car.
They do point to the connector on the back of the instrument cluster making a poor connection.
Follow these instructions http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1192573381 to pull the instruments out & push them back in again and it will probably start working.
