Title: Door check strap/bar help please.
Post by: Ken L on 26 December 2009, 15:47:34
This is the next job I want to do on the car and I've just had a look and the bar goes into the hole in the door, but there's nothing there to hold the bar. Drivers door by the way.
I can feel metal round the edges of the hole inside, but there are no screw holes above or below this hole, so how does it fit please? what do I need to replace exactly?

TIA
Ken

You can get a repair kit from Vx for the door. The mechanism bolts through the door on the hinge edge, sounds like your mechanism has collapsed, let me know if you need one or pictures as I have one (passenger side) out already :y

Some pictures would be helpful to start, thanks.  Are the mechanisms the same on passenger door as drivers door?

In those pic's the black plates bolt to the silver part inside the door, none of this is there on mine, just the hole in the door edge, nothing inside to bolt to.

so thats the mechanism, but what does it bolt to? as said on mine there's just a big hole, as if a plate is missing that this unit bolts to just inside the hole in the door. maybe it's irrepairable? broken in the door?

Wouldn't surprise me if all this mechanism was still inside the door!

Probably disassembled itself iside the door. The hole is what it attaches to.... Should be a square hole with 2 slots up and down. Looking at my pic... take the 2 bolts out, push the bar through door from inside then refit bolts through door skin and tighten. That holds it in place.

If you look at the bottom pick in the link RobG posted you can see the two bolts in place inside the hole in the door edge, I only have the hole in the door edge, nothing these bolts would bolt to, if you see what I mean, so there must be another plate with the slotted holes you mention missing from inside the door.

Yes seen this, it's whats actually inside the door that missing, is it a part factory fitted to the door that can't be replaced that the internal mechanism bolts to that's broken of? or does the missing plate bolt inside the door somewhere?
Need a pic inside the door I think.

The edge of the door through which the pictured mechanism passes is simply a pressed plate, constructed as part of the door at the factory.

Replacement/repair is by means of the guide as shown, whereby a 2 part repair plate is used, sandwiched either side of the remains of the original door.

The mechanism may be in the door where a previous owner ha dumped it, ir in the boot or in the skip.

Its the same mechanism for either side, the arm is marked L and R so that its the correct way up for either door.

Yes, Welung, that plate with the rectangular hole for the bar strap to go through, with the bolt holes....all that is gone!

The part of the door skin that the strap was bolted to is either at the bottom of the door, or still bolted to the strap at the bottom of the door. The repair mentioned in the 2 links above just sandwiches either side of the remnants of the front edge of the door.
If you wanted to go the whole hog & do the repair that Vauxhall would've done if you'd qualified at the time, then you can drill the spot welds out & replace this bit ......

As Broocie says, you need the repair kit from Vx and a replacement mechanism :y

Ha Ha! AndyB, after reading that with no spaces, then going to the pic...that is what is missing!, so can I buy that from the dealers, and drill and bolt it into place? is the original one welded in place at the factory did you say ( can't read it again to check)

Or remove the door and weld in a repair panel then refinish.  As AndyB says, its how the original recalls were done, albeit with a factory supplied, shaped, repair panel.  Now, its probably as easy with a workshop offcut....

Once its all back into place, its not really visible, unless someone peers through the closed door gap with the wing, using a torch...  ;)

Thanks for all the help guys, I think I know what I want now.
I'll get the part from the dealer if I can, otherwise make one, and drill and bolt into place.

I'll see if the mechanism is still inside the door, if not I will be needing that.
Thanks again ...very much apreciated

You'll need to provide the dealer with the part numbers. As Vauxhall didn't admit to having any problems, it means the part numbers aren't that easy to find.  :y  :y  :y  :y

Is that the part number on the plate in the pic? Can't quite make it out properly, any idea what it is?

Don't change that bit, it's way over the top. Mine was 'fixed' using the plates shown in the how to link ie
4 x 9195961 (reinforcement plate) @ £1.04 each. You need to trim to length the two outer plates to fit into the 'hole' at the front edge of the door, and then bolt the othe plates inside the door. It depends how much metal you have left as to how good a repair you end up with. You'll still end up with a reasonable/servicable 'repair'  :y  :y  :y

That how to is if the internal bracket/plate is still there, as it's all on the inside, inside the door hole, as stated I just have a gaping hole in the door the plate in your last pic has broken away inside, Those small black plates with the square slot and bolt holes would have nothing to bolt to.

Your door is like my drivers door is. When you use 2 plates on each door, you're just sandwiching what's left between the plates. You use a nut & bolt through each hole of the plate, whereas when new the nut would have been captive (I think  :-/) on what is now in the bottom of your door. The best thing is to catch the problem early, so that there is still metal atthe front edge of the door.  :y  :y  :y

I see the point, but on mine there is nothing left to sandwich between the new plates.

I might just make a plate to fit inside the door and drill and bolt it into place if I can't get the part from the dealer.
