when i bought the car i was told one of the cats is on its way out,3.2 engine. could i remove the cats completely or is it best just to move the sensers,or change the sparkplugs(100,000 miles)advice please
-
would see if cat is good or not first. removing can make it fail mot in uk,

assumption is the mother of all f*** ups. :-)
So find out why the light is on before you do ANYTHING.
The car will tell you the fault codes relating to it, just follow the "pedal trick" as listed under "paper clip" test in maintenance section. Very easy if you can count quick.
Thing is you have most likely been told correctly. If you see 0420 and or 0430 then you have the pre cat efficiency low fault these engines suffer with.
Easiest fix is the move the 2nd 02 sensor, re locate it behind the main cat and all will be well :-). Also covered by a guide in maintenance. Hth

If it is 0420 /0430 it is a known and common problem ... loads of threads about it :)

The guy in Vauxhall spares centre, Harold Hill very kindly put my car on tek2 and is showing both cats fault code and fault on 4 cylinder. I went there because ive got a random misfire (missing)at times. he said it could be either dis pac or ecu.but i think it could be sparkplugs?as this is the cheapest option and i dont know when they were last changed

I'd be really worried about his diagnosis ... :(
3.2 doesn't have a DIS pack .. it has "coil-per-plug" .... Personally I'd check the plug wells for oil (cam covers leaking ??) if the CPP sits in oil for any length of time they get a bit fragile, they are also expensive ... :(
If he got an 0420/0430 code I wouldn't worry about it overmuch. Lots of threads on THAT problem !! :)
Pedal trick will allow YOU to read the codes and decipher them .. :)

the misfire is very random.i had a vectra 2.5 and the dis went on that.the guy said it could be dispack breaking down giving misfire on 4 but as weve had some damp weather i was going to dry the connectors on the ecu tomorrow.funny thing is,i pulled into my drive with it misfiring, turned it off and restarted it and the misfire had gone. if i was going to change spark-plugs, what ones do i get?are 2.5 the same as 3.2?

My 2.6 started doing EXACTLY the same thing last week -reporting Random misfire & misfire cylinder 4 (codes shown are 0300 & 0304). Occasionally got the cat light flashing, but just like you, would stop, restart, and everything back to normal. I did post a thread here, and the general consensus was the coil pack. My car is under warranty, but there is a high excess - I've ordered a coil pack for the 2-4-6 bank, and it should come in the next few days, so I'm gonna swap it. Could be oil, but I only had new plugs 3k ago, and the wells were bone dry.
It also happens much less the colder it is! -8.5 at 0600 today, started like a summers day, and did not miss a beat. A few misses on the way home tonight, but no light.
Strange that mine is on Cyl.4 too !!! :o

when its playing up the light flashes too,its ok when its cold ,but when it gets hot thats when it plays up.i recon its the dis pack too then .but id like to try before i buy to make sure.

Unlikely .. as you don't have one !!!
As I said before .. you have 2 .. yes 2 CPP modules ... Coil Per Plug ... one for each bank... at just over £100 EACH from VX
In this picture ..
items 5 & 6 .. DIS packs for 2.0 litre
items 9 & 10.. DIS packs for 2.5 and 3.0 litre
item 20 CPP for 2.2 litre
item 26 CPP for 2.6 and 3.2 litre
only one shown but you have two .. one for 1,3,5 bank .. one for 2,4,6 bank

yes coil pack one on each bank,i only refer to them as dis pack's because ive had a 2.5 vectra which is basicly the same engine that had a dis pack.

Hi there, Autovaux are knocking them out for £70 plus delivery, but I've shopped around and managed to get a brand new guaranteed genuine GM one for £40. Part PART # 9118115 for the 2-4-6 bank :y
I keep accidentally calling them dis packs too... force of habit! ::)

My new coil pack arrived in the post xmas eve... good timing, as today it has got worse - Engine light on all the time now, missing like mad but thankfully still the same codes 0300 & 0304. Got stuck in bad snow earlier on in the week though, and was virtually stationary for 2 hours with the engine running, and it never missed a beat - temp was -3 though! Gonna give the new coil a bash tomorrow.... will let you know if it cures it - here's hoping :/
