Title: Steering Idler
Post by: Risky Duckfeet on 29 December 2009, 14:33:13
Hi All, Happy Christmas,

Does anyone have a picture of a steering idler that they could post? I've had a look on the site and can't seem to find one.
I popped down to a parts place today and they have given me a part that looks almost identical to a vertical link that I changed earlier in the year.
I know the idler needs changing as it came up on the MOT.
Also if anyone can give me a part number that I can give to the shop that would be helpful. It's a 1999 MV6, pre-facelift.
Thanks for any replies.
K

Yes I can say the one in the above link has been mentioned as a prefered buy rather that a cheaper version. ;)

I thought that was what I needed you'ld have thought that a parts shop would know the difference too.

One thing I have learned is that good advice from a parts shop is rarely the right advice. Do your own research or check on here first - it will be good advice that will save you loads of time and cash in the long run. Cheapo Parts nearly always means poor service and rubbish reliability.
The link you were given is the correct one, just make sure you do buy the cheapo!

if i can add my 2 cents worth, i bought an idler off these guys few weeks ago,,,cheepo one £19.95..i think,,,, after my 97 omega failed MOT due to excessive play in mine, fitted it, and it was every bit as bad as the one i removed, my shaft measured 17.92, so the shaft i new was fine, the bush measured 18.82, way too loose, and thus the problem, the guy in his defence was 100%, apoligised no end and i returned it for a full refund, so in short, i went to vauxhall, who were 3 quid cheeper than my local car parts guys,,,think it ended up costing me £58.00, so for the bother i had, the cheeper option did'nt work out,,,if it were my choice , i'd go to the local dealer,,,,if this is a genuine part then its cheep as chips,,,but it needs to be the real deal,,,

They offer two idlers one at 15 -20 and another at 30 english, speaking from experience and having read the same off countless other members pay the thirty quid and it will be fine. I bought the cheap one and it lasted all of about 4000 miles, got me through an MOT but then had to sdpend another thirty quid.

No need to go to vauxhall the part in the link is perfectly upto the job. IMO :y

Got one for £42 in the end. Not vauxhall though. Vauxhall said £62 plus VAT and I just can't afford that so soon after Christmas.
I will have a good look at the bolts and make sure that there is no wear but wish I'd thought to but a full kit. Can't change it till Friday so I'll let you know how I got on after that.
Thanks very much for all the help though everyone. ;)
