Title: A/C leak behind the dashboard
Post by: Omegadoha, Desert Member on 30 December 2009, 17:01:31
Is it possible to have an A/C leak behind the dashboard?

This is something a mechanic has suggested.

Yes. The evaporator lives somewhere up there  :(

Thanks. Isn't the evaporator next to the condenser? Sort of like built on?

No, the evaporator lies in the airstream of the ventilation system in the car. It absorbs the warmth from the incoming ambient air, cooling it and turns the refrigerant from a liquid to the gas. The condenser; at the front of the engine (infront of the radiator) cools the gas and allows it to turn back into a liquid with the aid of the compressor and the other air con bits in the circuit (receiver drier, expansion valve etc). Hence he blast of warm air up your leg as you get out of the car when the ambient temperature is high.

There is a lot of physics in aircon to do with latent heat of vapourisation but essentially this is what happens.
