Title: Handbrake query

It's MoT time soon, so I've given the recently-acquired tractor a good 'going-over'.

All seems well, with genuine GM parts throughout as per the accompanying receipts that I got with it on purchase.

The only real issue was that the handbrake, though effective, held on the fifth/sixth click.

So I adjusted the shoes, and now it's effective on the second click.
Question: Is this too tight, or should I 'back off' the shoe adjusters a little?
Anyone?

As long as the shoes are not dragging when you spin a wheel, then it'll be OK!  :y

My sentiments exactly Andy, though Mrs Sethsmate likes a little more leverage!

back it off a bit. follow manual.  it may be with a full load you drag.

Shoe adjusters should be set with the cable slack so they are not binding. If the lever travel is a bit high it needs to be adjusted out at the equalising linkage under the lever. Sounds like correct adjustment of the shoes has done the job though?

Dont know if the same is happening to mine...... (Pre Facelift).

I have EVERY MOT since it needed one, and the only thing it ever fails on is Handbrake Efficiency (annually).  I guess it has been adjusted.  Can anyone tell me if it is the same adjustment as on my Cavalier (stick something through the hole and move the adjuster round).

I get 6 clicks but still have a poor handbrake. (Not that I ever use it).

Yes it's the same. as previously stated, adjust each wheel with the cable slack, then take up any excess travel with the adjuster under the lever, under the car.

That will perhaps be why you get a chit for an innefficient handbrake!  Use it or loose it.....   ;)
