Title: Temp gauge not moving
Post by: Justdave on 01 January 2010, 09:09:23
Happy New year to all Omega owners, can anybody point me in the right direction please, the temperature gauge on my 02 2.6 Elite hardly moves, it barely comes off the bottom line, it's only just started acting up, the heaters seam ok so I'm thinking the thermostat is ok, does anybody know where the temp sender is ? is it the 'bigish' plug type switch on the top right-hand side of the radiator  ? any help appreciated.
Cheers
Dave

Sender is on the coolant bridge in the valley of engine.  Its the spade connector one (the one beside it is the ecu one).

But it will most likely be your stat - to prove, take it for a run, then let it idle (with ECO ON) for a while when you get back. Does it creep up to just above midpoint on gauge, before fans kick in?

Cheers guys, you've convinced me to book the bugar in to the dealers, it'll cost I know but it sounds awkward and time consuming.

Dave

You could ask Loo-Knee (aka Daz)!  ;) A lot less expensive than a dealer & more knowledgeable  :y  :y  :y

I've sorted the problem, I wanted to make sure it was the stat before going any further so whilst checking the top and bottom hoses for heat / flow etc I noticed the two front fans were turning, as I'd only just started the engine I thought this a bit strange, so after checking the wiring and plugs for 20 minutes for any signs of obvious faults and drawing a blank I sat in the car, 'pi**ed off and a fine set of brass boll**ks to boot', then I noticed the heater was on ! I turned the heater off so as to heat the engine up a bit quicker and the two fans went off, I switched the heater on again and the two fans came back on ! I then turned the heater to ECO and the fans went off again, I left the engine running, heater in ECO mode, and the temp gauge started to rise, I left it for a while and all the fans kicked in, this told me the thermostat must be working correctly, took the car for a run and now everything is working as it should be (obviously I hear you saying). So do I take it that below a certain outside temperature I should switch to ECO mode !!! This is all probably obvious to you but it never crossed my mind, I'm just glad it's sorted so long as I'm right about the ECO mode !

Thanks for your help guys, also managed to clean the pollen filter whilst I was messing around thanks to looking around the forum and threads.

Would appreciate confirmation on the ECO bit if anyone can help  :)

No, I still maintain your stat is shagged. In fact, I think you have just proved it.

Surely if the stat was u/s the engine would not reach  operating temperature !!

It would heat up if car not moving. The fans coming on (normal for aircon) is chilling rad. If stat working, water wouldn't be passing through rad if not up to temp

I see what you mean, good point, whats the best way to check the stat ?

You already have. Its NFG.

I had exactly the same on my 2.6 when I bought it in September. Heating worked fine but fuel consumption was worse than I was expecting.

I fitted a new one and now get about 5mpg more.

The last check (idling with ECO button pressed) is to confirm that the gauge and temperature sensor are giving a sane reading. If the needle barely moves off the stop in normal driving BUT does rise to 85+ before the cooling fans kick in then change the stat.

False alarm ! I haven't sorted it ! I'm getting all of the above symptoms described - exactly ! ECO pressed and at idle - temp rises, left a bit longer - fans kick in, driving - temp barely moves, summer all seemed fine, winter - sh*te.

A sincere thanks to you all for your input - now I know for sure it's the stat and obviously some of you have experienced this problem before.

I'm speaking with Loo-Knee later today

Cheers guys

Been having the same problem , needle would not move for ages but it did eventually , might just be down to the current climate , its not the stst as mines a new one and its only started since the weather got cooler.

Easy check of stat .. start engine from cold with all heating switched OFF and leave to idle whilst resting a hand on the top pipe tot he radiator. It should remain cold until a sudden burst of heat occurs as the stat opens.

IF the pipe just very slowly warms up then the stat is failed open.

:)
