sorry never been on hear before all new to me
We need more info before a correct guestimate is given...
What engine?
2.0, 2.2, 2.5, 2.6, 3.0, 3.2 petrol?
2.2, 2.5 diesel?
Some on here are good at diagnosis but a wee help would be a wee help! ;D :y
-
it is a 2.6 v6 cd petrol
-
last thing i want is the cam to go and end up with no car,is it safe to drive or not can anyone give me a rough idea please.
-
first thing to do is actually confirm if is the aux belt (there is no 'fan' belt as such as fans are electric)
Pop the aux belt off and run the engine, but only for 5-10 seconds max, see if the rattle remains, or dispears.
If it goes, spin each unit on the aux belt by hand (aircon pump / tentionsio / ect) check for any wear/noise
-
it really sounds like it is coming from one of the coggs that r on the front of the engine ,not where the cam belt is the one in front of that.
-
if it is the auxbelt can i still run it for a couple of days
-
you still need to check, its very hard to tell. I thought i had an aux belt issue, but it turned out to be a cambelt tensioner which is much more serious than aux tensioner.
You still need to confirm what exactly is the issue, before costs / fixing comes into it.
-
If its your auxbelt tensioner and it seizes (like mine did) your aux belt will shred itself, bits may cause further damage, and your water pump and power steering pump will stop working. No water pump could damage engine!! I was lucky only damage a melted auxbelt tensioner and a part melted, shredded belt.
My advice is to pop the belt as tunnie suggested sooner rather than later and run engine for a very short time - no more than 20 secs. If noise not there check all pulleys by hand!!

Aux belt pully takes less than 20 minutes to change, so pop it off to confirm the fault then get a new pully from Vx .. and you can buy the pully on its own .. you don't need the whole tensioner .. :)
