Title: Ignition Barrel
Post by: ali on 03 January 2010, 22:57:25
After re building my old ignition I now have the key turning in the barrel :) but tried to re fit it today and I cannot get it to click in :-? the outer casing goes in on its own ok but when its altogether there seems to be something stopping the last few mm. I know I had to release a sprung clip to get it out but does not seem to help when trying to put it back in. Infront of the hole is plastic casing attached to the steering wheel, do I need to remove that to get better access :-? I have the key in position 1.

have a look at the thin end of the ingnition barrel this must fit into the ingition swicth perfectly or it will stop the barrel going all the way in.i asked about the battery because i could not remember when i took mine out, did the switch turn off the ingition lights when barrel was extracted.

Is the metal clip down on the side of the ignition barrel?

Look into the hole in the steering lock, at the bottom of the hole is a small plate which the end of the lock barrel has to pass through. If this has dropped down you cant get the barrel in fully.
Just lift it up with a small screwdriver etc.

Yesterday I just held barrel in enough to try and drive the car in some shelter to work on, as surrounded by open fields and freezing. Was doing well until steering lock came on and barrel fell out :o :o :o Just missed the fence and was pleased I hadnt got going any further :-[ :-[  Left the car and gave up for a bit then had another go and then the battery died. Couldnt get the bonnet open and gave up like a real girlie :'( :'( :'(
Day off tomorrow so will have another go. I have pushed down the clip keeping the steering lock on but not a small plate up. I think ignition lights went off :-? but as Ive let this drag on for ages now I cant remember.
