Title: Estate rear shock absorbers.
Post by: Olympia5776 on 06 January 2010, 17:41:37
Decided to keep the old girl for another year so have been going over all the small niggles on her which include creaks and knocks from the rear .
I replaced the two rear shock absorbers with new items about 12 months ago and have only done about 2 K miles since but have noticed at slow speed there is a very slight subdued " knock" from the top mounts .
I removed the small floor covering plates and the noise is definatly comming from top mounts .
With the shocks unbolted and bushes removed at the top the noise stops.
I took them off and checked them under compression in a vice and they were OK . I've tightend the top bushes as per the manual and tightened them up entirely but still the noise persists.
So I guess I'll change out the bushes to see if that eliminates the problem.
A couple of questions ,
Are the shocks the same on the estate as the saloon ( Possible wrong length items supplied off  E Bay )
Has anyone fitted Polybushes to the top mounts and if so where are the available from ?
Heres a sketch of the orientation of the bushes as currently fitted.

Saloon shockers are different to estate ones.

Try shortening the metal sleeve, say by 3/16".
This'll give more 'pinch' to the mounting rubbers.

Are you sure it isn't caused by 'stiction' in the shock absorbers ? (I don't know if it is a dictionary word but it describes that type of friction that makes Hamer Horror door hinges creak)

Are they genuine shock absorbers? It might be that they haven't bedded in yet due to the low mileage.

I initially thought that stiction was the problem but as I say when compressed on the vice there is no noise or abnormal resistence .Tried lub'ing the shaft but as the seal is gas tight it made no difference.
They're non genuine items ,they are branded but off hand I cant remember the make ::)

Good idea re the sleeve ,I'll try that tomorrow. :y

I can confirm this
I was supplied with saloon ones in error
They did fit but the rear-end bounced around and suspension bottomed which caused me to question the garage that fitted them - their supplier had made an error
