i thought it was all going too well, got my new car 29 Dec, 2001 Y plate 2.6 CDX auto nocturno blue, leather the dogs, drives faultless, silky smooth gearchange, effortless drive, no nasty noises, rattles etc, went on my 1st real drive today, Manchester to Shrewsbury, half way there, warning, oil level low, stopped to buy a litre of oil, opened oil cap, RED ALERT, creamy sludge, nightmare, but puzzled, normally spells the obvious, head gasket, but doesn't lose water, doesn't overheat, no sludge in expansion tank, not running lumpy, heater nice and toasty, so don't know what to make of it, any ideas gang? thanks Ray.

If its on the cap then its nothing to worry about :y
-
as above mate :y
v6's do this alot if all they do is short runs in this weather :y
give it a wipe and see how it goes :y
-
As long as it's not on the dipstick it's normal for the V6 to do that. Highest / coolest part of the engine.

Clean out the filler neck, change the oil using GM 10/40 semi, and give it a good long blast every once in a while. :y
-
yeah, normal-ish. Worse with certain oils such as castrol. I stick to gm oil, don't get mayo (though tend to always do 20+ mile journeys)
remember breathers will get in similar state, so worth cleaning them

Just as I was going to suggest :y
And maybe the last owner didn't use a decent oil and with short journeys hence the creamy bits.

should not be a problem. Dont panick if 'oil lack' comes on either. The first time I had that happen was on a French m'way and all sorts of visions about what had happened. No strange noises so continued to service area that was nearby. Oil level not below half way but topped it up anyway

This is quite common, its very sensitive!
As to the sludge, I shouldn't worry, we've had a cold spell and you've got ally heads. If worried, do what's suggested and change the oil. I have this on my 924 turbo and it was never an issue. Don't panic! Its not a Fiat or an Alfa (Little personal joke to myself)

Thanks all, darth doing cambelts etc end of Jan, so i'm sure he'll advise on it then, it did have me worried for a while though.

If you've got him on he case then no worries, sorted :y

How was the oil level? If the warning remains persistently, it could be the oil level sensor on the way out. Hopefully not though. :y
-
As above - it's no biggy, nothing to worry about, just make sure that the oil is up to the FULL mark (and change it if not done recently - preferably to GM oil as Mark said) and drive on....

One bit that has not had a mention is the breather system needs to be completely clear and not obstructed in any way. Cold weather and hot fumes cause the problem. In summer, whenever it arrives, the problem will probably go away of its own accord.
It is, like everyone else has said, a common problem to have some mayo in the oil filler neck. V6s are notorious for it. They do however have an excellent reputation for NOT blowing head gaskets. Provided they are the genuine VX article though!
