Title: Cleaning V6 throttle body?
Post by: 24_Valve on 10 January 2010, 01:56:57
the throttle body on my V6 is full of crap and gunky carbon deposits. a mate of mine says it would be ok to remove air ducts from the throttle body, run the engine at fast idle and spray loads of carb cleaner direclty into throttle body to clean it through. Is this a safe bet or will I foul the plugs, injectors etc? any advice would be helpful. I don't want a clean throttle body if its going to foul everything else in the process. He assures me it will just burn off, only causing nasty exhaust smoke while I do it?  I trust his advice but he is used to working on carburettor engines not direct fuel injection systems. can anyone help?

A better bet would be to remove the ducts, open the throttles by hand and spray some carb cleaner onto the throttle plates and bores, then use a clean rag to carefully rub the deposits off. Just spraying carb cleaner won't actually shift the muck.

There will be a small amount of carb cleaner in the intake after this, but it won't do any harm.

Note that the "muck" comes from the breather system, so it would be worth giving that a good clean out while you're at it, as blockages can cause the cam cover gaskets to fail. Make sure the oil changes are regular too (ideally every 5k or less to keep it all clean).

Thanks for the advice. That would most probably explain why my right side cam rocker cover gasket has already failed! I lose approx 1 litre of oil every 750 miles. I didn't know about the breather system (can't find any refernce to in haynes manual) can you give me some pointers, where its located etc., thanks again, steve

Try looking in the maintenance guides first, lots of items are covered that questions are repeatedly asked about.
Its not such a bad job but the camcover seals are a real beast. If they need to be done, don't be a cheapskate and use the aftermarket crap that WILL not fit and WILL leak again, use the genuine VX ones that fit as they should. They are more expensive yes, but they do fit perfectly and there will be no more leaks.
