is this stuff ok to use on a few quick oil changes ?
got a couple of sticky lifters and i want to clean the cr*p out of the engine
the current oil ( 10/40 ) has only done a few hundred miles and looks like sh*t already
500 miles ish of gentle running ( town / short motorway ) between changes
i've not got a trade card yet

I've got some proper Vx stuff (semi) which I got with trade card. You can have it for what it cost me as it was on one of the special offers a few months ago.
Hows that rear heated seat?

The best thing to do with the 20w-50 is to use it for a quick change, just put it in, leave it to run for a short while and then come back and put the right oil in. That should clean the engine out a bit.

Virtually any oil will be fine to flush the engine. I would run it for 500 miles between changes if you're trying to free up lifters though. It takes some time for oil to work its' way through the lifters.
Might also be worth trying a hydraulic lifter additive treatment too.
.. and if you're going to be running a cheap and nasty 20w50 (no reason not to use it up in this manner, IMHO) I would bear in mind that you are using a low performance oil. Don't cane it, especially if the engine isn't fully up to working temperature.

I tend to use a tin of Wynne's Oil Flushing additive (Halfords)before every oil change to thoroughly clean the muck out. Pour it in on top of what is already there cos its only about half a pint, run for a few miles or at least until the engine gets good and hot (I usually do the oil change the next day) and my oil now stays relatively clean, certainly not thick black smelly stuff anymore. It still goes black but now looks and smells like an oil instead of burnt tarmac. I always use The genuine VX semi-synth too.
At one time years ago you could buy a proper flushing oil but that was really then doing two oil changes. Probably why it stopped being popular.
I know of others who use an oil made for diesels because it contains a detergent additive. Theu swear it does no harm but I have not used it personally. I do see him on the roads everday though.

trouble with adding an engine flush to the oil is you can clean too well, dislodging crap which can block oilways, regular (every few hundred mile) changes for a short period is a far safer clean.

True. Although if it's been done regularly there's no reason not to continue, IMHO, because the engine won't dump a harmful amount of crud into the oil.
It's when you do it to an engine that has an unknown or poor history that you can really land yourself in the mire. Frequent oil changes are a much safer bet.
