Popped out last night to pick up the missus, and whoopstiming belt gone, I'm sure most of you have, at sometime, tried to push these stylised Chieften tanks on your own, power steering is a wonderful invention until you haven't got it any more, really it should be an Olympic endurance sport at London 2012. so today the garage that has looked after it for me for the last 3 years have it in their workshops, out of the wind rain and the cold, and they are making those kind of inward whistling noises that only car mechanics learn to do properly during their training. I can only assume that 2008 is going to be a cashless year after I finished paying this bill, but it's so worth it, to get my luxary armchair on wheels back under my butt.
So this experience has taught me three things,
1 Christmas is financially avoidable if you can convince your better half that the car is more important than a new set of saucepans and a turkey roasting tin that she was going to get.
2 That space on the driveway, that until now was the sacred and hallowed ground of the Vauxhall Omega (kiss kiss lick lick) has been ursurped by our sons Suzuki Swift and a Fiat Punto, like bind weeds growing on virgin fertile soil, I think I'll need one of those flame throwers to get rid of them once 'daddies' motor comes out of the hospital.
3 Buy the missus a weekly bus ticket, i know the belt would have gone anyway but these things always happen when it's minus 30 degrees, middle of the rush hour and you've popped out quickly with no coat on and you've not even bothered to change out of your slippers, this morning I'd have been dressed ready for action, the garage would have been open and the sun would have been shining.
So here I am at home, got a day off, but can't go anywhere, I feel I'm Mr Unpopular at the moment, like an ugly women that no one wants to kiss, is there some one out there who can reassure me that life is going to be alright again soon and I shouldn't really be so pessimistic, is my 'Meega' going to be a like a new woman after her cosmetic surgery or a reincarnation of the Elephant man coughing and spluttering to the end of her days.

Consolations :(
Can't be happy with that.
How old was the belt / tensioners?
-
I'll say it here as well then. ;)
Don't worry, I can reassure you that life is going to be alright again soon and you shouldn't really be so pessimistic, your 'Meega' is going to be a like a new woman after her cosmetic surgery or a reincarnation and nothing like the Elephant man coughing and spluttering to the end of her days.
Hope this helps.

I've got a receipt for the last change and it's just over 29000 miles, ironically i'd just spoken to my tame mechanic to change all at the MOT in Febuary along with oil filters and spark plugs, oh well so much for forward thinking

It's never a good time for something like this to happen...but so close to Xmas??? bummer.

Ouch, what is that in years as well?
Assuming the Belt & tensioners were done, and all genuine, there may even be a warranty.
Sure I heard somewhere the genuine ones are guarantee'd for the 4 years / 40000 miles

the reciept shows they were fitted 4 1/2 years ago,
I use my 'meega' for long tours only, just 5k per year on holidays and visiting parentals in Wales, it's not long distance but travelling time is stretched by those damn hills on the way , so the 'meega' is perfect for 6 hour journey if you still want to be refreshed afterwards (M6 toll road takes a bashing though as I try to emulate a rocket pilot) , i don't subject it to commutor traffic except to pick up the missus, so I'm feeling agrieved at the moment.

Shouldn't be to pricey....pop the head off and get it re-built then re-fit.

Not on an Alfa....there gits to work on.
About 3-4 hours for a head swap on a 4 pot.

the last time we (me and one expert mechanic) changed only the right manifold gasket it take 10 hours... ;D

my man at the car hospital tells me that he did an Omega two years ago and it cost over a grand, valves, valve guides, blah blah blah (stuff over my head) doesn't he realise it's a Vauxhall not a Zonda,or a Massararti, and due to the festivities I may not see it till first week of January.
How can I sleep at nights. and if that nots bad enough he's lent me a Ford Escort, you can call me fat if you want, but it's like trying to get Dolly Parton in to my wifes C cup. ::)

That's a lot of money. I off Ebay item 130183073405. 65 quid, and a few other odds and sods.
If it needs valve guides and the like it's really not that expensive to get them done.
Add a few hours labour - even a day's labour. How he got to a grand beats me.

What a thieving git....
He needs to remove the head and send it to this guy...

He will re-build the head with new valves, skimmed and guides where required and include a head gasket kit for 199 quid......
So your man only has to remove and re-fit the thing.

Cor! wish I'd found him when my Laguna chewed up one if its' cam bearings a couple of years back. Paid a lot more than that for a recon head. (including cam, admittedly, but a poverty spec 8v one).

I agree with Mark.... not a long job to do on a 4 pot. I've done a few.
My vectra, top end kit INC valves, was only £99
Where are you? I'll fix it for £500 ;D ;D ;D ;D
when it gets warmer
