Title: MOT failure 1.5.A4a
Post by: DZB on 16 January 2010, 18:06:44
My car failed it's MOT today on "Rear hazard warning lamps not flashing in phase, with ignition on [1.5.A4a].  When I picked the car up I understood the hazards were not working at all it was only when I got home and read the failure chit that I realised the actual reason for failure (so I have not questioned the garage yet!!). However using the Mk 1 eyeball all the lamps work and all appear in phase so I don't know how they came to their conclusion.  Has anyone heard of this particular MOT failure before or am I being taken for a ride.

If your own eyes tell you that they are in sequence then trust in them. Unlike the tester you have nothing to gain by lying to yourself have you? Yep, certainly looks like an over eager tester hoping to rob you of some coins and do a nice easy fictional repair. Never known one fail for that before so presumably everything else was ok?
As already advised; Take to another test station and see what happens there. If it passes just phone the pillocks and tell them they have lost a customer - if you were a regular one rub it in too.
If you absolutely convinced that they have tried it on report the matter to your local trading standards office and suggest they put a test car through. Its been done before!

If everything seems fine, I would be inclined to go back and wtf he is on about...  Sounds like a test place I took an car of mine to who failed me on a dim side light bulb.  Don't be scared to threaten to report them either...

You shouldn't have to pay for retest either, as I believe, please correct me if I am wrong, that if it is bulb related they just have to observe that they are functioning correctly...

Take it back to the garage and ask him to show you the fault as your 'mechanic' says that he's talking out of his arse. Ask for the supervisor to be present as well.

I would say if your happy that they are working and flashing in time just take it back for the retest. As others have said if its only failed on that then its a free one anyway..
To be honest i cant see a tester failing it on something as obvious as that if they were working ok.  I know others think us testers are over picky full of it etc but with the test cars and spot checks from vosa i dont think its worth losing our licence for nothing..

If they say its still the same just ask them to show you  then you can see for your self if they are telling the truth or trying to rip you off.

Thanks evrybody - went back today and asked the tester to show me the fault.  Lots of blushing and farting and "they didn't work like that when we tested them".  Anyway got my MOT and said fairwell to that garage for the very last time!!
Thanks all again.

Now you know why the MOT isn't worth a wank.

A pass or fail is decided purely on what the tester thinks is right (or wrong), there is NO set standard and until there is then the MOT is nothing more than bum paper IMO.
