Title: Exhaust - whats the damage?
Post by: John Lewis on 21 January 2010, 01:24:01
Hi guys, I have some problems. MOT looming soon too.

I've recently started getting a witches wig out of my exhaust pipe, which I presume is wadding for the silencer. About 3ft of it has come out in the last day.

But...there's been a manifold tick for a good 3-4 months which has recently got worse (it previously disappeared after 5-10mins), and it's now progressed to a clunk every time I go over a speed bump, and a slight exhaust smell inside the car. Its also made my MPG suffer a LOT (about 15mpg, 8-9 under normal acceleration) and the car is running awful when under 2000revs.

So, what's the damage, in both ways?

Is the wadding likely to be from the central silencer or back box? I've not a clue when it comes to exhausts...

My poor car is a 97/R 2.5v6 Reflection (saloon).

Any advice much appreciated, I need to get it done in the next few days if poss.

Thanks!

Deary me,
Sounds like your back box has done its baffles and is allowing the dampening wadding to escape (witches hair as you so eloquently put it).
The other noise may be that the downpipe is loose where it joins the manifold or some other part of the exhaust system mounting not being as it should.
When you get the back box done, if you do, ask them to check the rest and 'advise' you. Some let you wander underneath yourself so take the opportunity if they let you.

I'm sure others will follow, but I feel sure it's the back box and it must be changed ASAP because the boxes have a habit of exploding!!!

Yep, you knows it..

Been underneath the car on a ramp now and took adivce. No leaks, looks pretty clean all round and it defo seems like it is the back box. Its not that noisy yet from the back box and I've retired it from motorway duties for now. However I need to get the manifold and/or connections looked at as its drinking fuel like a Veyron!

My mechanic has advised checking out the forum for specialists on the manifold problem so as not to eat up labour time, he's a good bloke and doesn't like adding large labour costs if avoidable amazingly enough.

(Jones' Garage Macclesfield btw, he deserves a mention, never let me down, always very reasonable and honest).

Gonna start a new thread about the manifold now. Thanks for your help on this guys.  :y
