Title: Need a manifold expert, East Cheshire
Post by: John Lewis on 21 January 2010, 15:23:26
Hi guys

Anyone know of somebody that can look at/work on my exhaust manifold for me in the Cheshire area? It needs urgent attention. I'm at SK117AD (Macclesfield) but can't remember the map key. Would Elite Pete be a contender for this? I can travel a bit if needs, and as long as its not major beans I can do it cash.

I've been told its an engine out jobby (some speculation, some education).

Any suggestions? There's someone in Northwich, is it TheBoy? Was gonna get my cambelt done there once.

Cheers in advance

John

How you doing John? It was me with the cambelt, what side manifold is it?

How do Pete, cheers for the reply! The lad that looked at it said it was coming from the drivers side and I am inclined to agree. We spent a few mins having a snoop around and its definitely on one side.

What do you reckon, replacement?

Cheers bud

John.....I would not do the manifold until you have sorte your exhaust out.

Its clear that the baffles have collapsed and hence what was a small manifold blow will now be considerably worse due to the restriction in the exhaust.....you might find that the restriction is bad to the point where its popped one of the rubber couplers on the air injection setup.

Your manifold blow will not be impacting your mpg to the extent that you are seeing

Ahhhh righto, that makes sense as it goes. I was gonna do the back box as a matter of course, so I'll try and get that done today.

Is there any chance of this material being from the central silencers, or do they contain different materials? Sorry I'm not familiar with exhausts, I'm a designer, lol.

Thanks

John

Right guys I have replaced the back box which was completely shafted. MPG is a bit better now, still not great though.

Do you reckon I should get it into an MOT-only place now to see what it brings up? The exhaust appears to be less smoky by far now but I still have my manifold tick.

Getting there though!

now the exhaust is blowing clear, time to look at the manifold i think. I would not get an MOT done myself yet, usually free re-test is only within 7-14 days, so not a lot of time to get everything sorted?

@Tunnie - I saw this too late, doh. Just put it thru, that'll teach me!

Yep new backbox made it better, but failed miserably on emissions, and has a misfire. Could this be due to the manifold problem? it *is* blowing a lot. Also there's a handbrake problem, 15% efficient, I replaced the cable not long ago but another part (which escapes me) was seized so needs replacing.

@Elite Pete: Time to check in, me thinks. Got any free time next week?  :D
