Title: Engine pulsing
Post by: LFF64 on 02 February 2010, 19:59:10
Hello all not been on for a while to chat just been lurking
I seem to have a slight problem again  :D
When I start the car hot or cold the engine pulses slightly it is more noticable in the dark with the lights on because the lights all pulse with the engine it does this for a couple of minutes max then stops pulsing all together
It does not seem to be engine speed related either as the pulsing seems to stay constant
There are no warning lights on, on the dash either any ideas anyone please  :y

yup, sounds like the alternator could be on the way out, put a volt meter across on the battery and post up the details when under idle & 3k rpm  :y

I vaguely recall a similar problem before...  ...was it you?

Revs stay constant whilst its doing this?

TB yes revs stay almost stable , I personally dont think its alternator related as it is charging ok and only does it on start up If it was alternator I would have expected it to continue all the time really
I will stick a DVM on it just in case
Other than this the car is running ok
Just a thought thinking aboput it I do still have a shot exhuast manifold gasket could this be the cause maybe  :question

If you have an analogue meter, that may show up better than DVM

Voltage regulator or SAI system. Had it on one of my migs about 3 years back. Pulled the fuse on the SAI, no more "pulsing" of lights :y

Same here, last mig and the current one both did this when the SAI failed. Just pull out the big red fuse under the bonnet (under the cover by the battery) to cut power to the SAI.

If the problem persists then at least you know its not the SAI.

Spot on Rob and Big pulled the red fuse earlier and the pulsing has stopped  :y
Just one question what else does the fuse do is it just the SAI ?
