Post by: a2reed on 02 February 2010, 11:24:36
I have an Elite 2.5 and need 4 new tyres

When I checked the tyre sizes it seems they are different fron and back ...is that right???? do the back ones have a higher profile???...or has some spotty yoof in the past not had the right ones in stock so put the nearest thing on the car!!!!!?

Back  235/45/ZR17 97W
Front 235/40/ZR17 97W

Search for threads about tyres, plenty recently, soon have you totally confused. the bottom line though is cheap tyres are crap. i have the same size as you and they are triangle/backdiamond,identical tread, chinese made. i have no confidence in them whatsoever and recently changing front to back got rid of what appeared to be a bearing noise from the front, now it sounds like a bearing/diff noise at the back, dont know which tyre it is thats doing it but these things can be expected from cheap tyres. i worked a while fitting tyres and got no complaints fitting maxxis tyres and a lot of the customers were taxi drivers.they are a budget tyre but appeared to be acceptable. mid range tyre maybe Vredestein/Toyo. the other bottom line is there is no cheap good tyre at this size.

i am half tempted to try maxxis victra asymmet M35 ,i like the tread pattern(can be seen on camskill tyres site) but would prefer to hear some feedback on them first, otherwise i bite the bullet and get continental SC3.,so app. £250-300 a set or   £450-500,respectively.the difference is £4 a week over a year to have the best!

if you mean the enduro tyres 235/45/17 on ebay at £160 for 4,cracking price. However it will stop you enjoying your car knowing you have put cheap rubber on.

2.5 Elite as standard have 16" alloys and a 15" steel spare, (GM cheap skates), so the size to go for is, as already said 225/55/16V (W for 3.0).
Mytyres are good as they give a performance rating, i've used Nangang  which lasted well (20K) also Hero Milanza.
Some types of Falker tyres are reported tobe good on Omega's, all from £220 a set of 4.

If you are going to drive at normal speeds and dont mind a bit of tyre noise(probably but not guaranteed)then budget tyres ought to be fine.
Ask the tyre shop what are the cheapest shite they sell and then ask for the ones next up from that! Cant go wrong.

mytyres.co.uk have some good prices, i paid £330 fitted for 4 Avon ZV5 235/45 17s the other day, they have all the cheap brands but as mentioned above, they arent worth it.

OK will try them ... sorry to go on but I am a tyre novice ... would Avon be any good?

And is it really worth the difference in tyres or is it just brand name?

Tyre choice is really personal, Avon are a well known and respected brand, Bentley use them so cant be all bad!

There seems to be 3 tiers of tyre companies -

lowest are the chinese copy tyres ie your linglongs and wanlis, i would say avoid as they are cheap for a reason, i think Autocar did a test where the stopping distance in the wet was quite a few car lengths more than a branded tyre!

Middle are your Nexen / Kuhmo / Falken tyres, i think are ok if on a really tight budget, some people swear by them, others less so.

Top are your main brands, Goodyear, Continental, Avon, Michelin, Dunlop etc, companies that spend a lot on R&D.

I went with Avons from Mytyre as they were £82 each fitted where every other tyre site had them over £110! I had some Goodyear F1s from them in the summer and they were cheapest then too, im not going back to those tyres as they only lasted 10k miles and i dont need super grippy tyres for my (fairly) sedate driving style!

Decided to go with the Avon DV5s from Blackboots .. hope they will be ok £93.50 per corner plus £70 inc VAT for the alignment!! nearly 440 for the lot ... cars not worth much more than that !!!!!

Have I been ripped off?
Not too late to pull out

You didnt want to use mytyres then? They are £86.50 fitted i think, the prices do go up and down somewhat. £70 for alignment seems high unless they are doing the full works geometry set up and it needs actually adjusting.

I would just get the tyres then shop around for alignment check, i know people recommend WIM here, i used a place in Salisbury that has the full Hunter set up and a bloke who knows how to use it, they did a cracking job on my car, although my Goodyears were worn they were even across the whole tread.

How about the tyre load index.  For the 235/45/17s you get to choose between a 94 and a 97 and the manual for a facelift doesn't give any guidance...
Title: Re: Tyre Size
Post by: a2reed on 03 February 2010, 21:52:35
did look at mytyres but was only a fiver in it per corner and a long drive so going  for the WIM chaps... partly because the old tyres are worn in all the wrong places so the full geometery thing will need doing as well ... thought I might as well get it all done at once for the sake of an extra £20 or so .. not too late if anyone has another place to go to

Thats a good deal if going to WIM then, they will do a good job.
