Hi,
After clearing my scuttle drain because I suspected that it was the cause of water in my passenger footwell :( , we now know that the cause of the water was not a blocked scuttle drain, it was a leaky scuttle!
Considering how little room for maneuver there is down there, can the pollen-filter holder be removed so we can tackle the rust and seal the scuttle? And if so, how?
Please help - with all this rain I feel like the little Dutchman holding his finger in the d**e, and I still have a small pond in my footwell :'(.

PS I want to say that the Dutchman has his finger in the 'embankment to prevent flooding', but for some reason the word keeps coming up with stars in the middle!

Wish I was a dutchman with his finger in a DYKE!!!!!!!!

Are you coming out Diane?

never heard of anyone removing it.
We have several guides in the maint section on clearing out the drain, some involving a bit of electrix cable to push through the dirt.
then they tend to stay clear, esp with the odd watering can full to help flush out any rubbish.

the guides...

Thanks, Jimbob.
The drain is now clear and the scuttle is draining just fine, but obviously previous owners have let water build up in there and rust has led to holes in the sides of the scuttle.
I was hoping we could take out the pollen filter holder to create a bit of space in the scuttle, otherwise I suppose we could try applying sealant with one of those paintbrushes you use behind radiators.
Does anyone have any other ideas?

Well I am sure they do come out as one of the breakers on here removed one for me once.
Would imagine its scuttle off etc plus probably glove box out to to get at the internals
-
If the holes are only in the sides, such that it does not flood in when the drain is clear, I would be inclined to fill the holes with a bit of body filler, then paint over. :y

;D ;D ;D ;D :y

We'll investigate taking the holder off (thanks Marks) and body filler is another good idea (thanks Shackeng).
If we can get the thing off, it will be easy to apply the filler, otherwise it's back to 'keyhole' surgery.

Hi
Just a thought, I may be totally wrong and if I am I'm sorry!!! but if you were to remove the glove box like Marks DTM said pull back the passenger footwell carpet can you see the rust holes on the inside? If so you could patch them up from here - no need to remove the skuttle.
::)
-
I've already had the carpet taken up and most of the soundproofing padding, but the man who did it for me left the padding at the front of the footwell because he was afraid he might damage the wiring loom. That might still have to be (very, very carefully) taken out as it's now soaking and I don't know if it will ever dry out otherwise.
But taking out the glovebox is another idea to think about, and I'd much rather work from inside the car than through the scuttle opening.

Hi Janet & Welcome to the OOF. Please let us know how you get on, it all adds to the knowledge base for others to call on in future. :y

Hi,
I think we're going to try patching it from behind the glovebox and perhaps paint Thompsons Roof Seal on the inside of the scuttle.
I'll certainly let you all know how it works. I can't be the only one out there with a leaky scuttle ;D

having removed the glove box once to replace a servo tronic power steering relay, i think its safe to say that is the first of a thousand things that need to be removed to get to the area your talking about.
Air bag, dash and a load of other elecrical panels are in the way iirc.

I don't think I have a passenger airbag, but we'll be careful!

Dont bother with that Thompson stuff. I would try applying a polyurethane mastic using a cartridge gun, that should fit down past the pollen filter once its removed, and you can probably ease it into place if necessary with a radiator brush as you suggested. google 'rallithane' its a superb product :y
