Title: How hot is yours??
Post by: markh1 on 02 February 2010, 09:16:47
I have just done a coolant flush on the mig and put in the new type coolant (I made sure I flushed all the old stuff out)

However the temperature still varies from about 90 upto about 97 or thereabouts. Is this normal? On my other cars once the engine is upto temperature the leccy fans keep the engine at a constant temp.

No, running 90 to 97 on a v6 is too high. 85 to 90 is about right for a v6.

mine runs at 85 all day never alters except if stood then goes to 90 but soon drops to 85 when gets moving

No its not, its half way on the gauge.

markh1 has mini-facelift, so it is 95 on a normal run, up to 97 in traffic, fans kick in, brings it down to 95.

If yours runs at 85 on pre-facelift stat is nackered.

Then yours is fine, pre-facelifts run hotter on the dash, 95 is normal

No they don't  ;) I'd like to see you fit a V6 stat on a 2.2  ;D

So what if my temp gauge only gets to 75?  Does this mean that the stat has a problem, or could it be whatever sends the temp to the dash has an issue?

Don't have a problem with heat in the cabin, comes in within 3-4 mins of starting the engine from cold.

Stat failed, needs replacing. Comes as a whole unit from GM including the housing. Remember to get the two extra o-rings for the coolant transfer pipe

And what are the consequnces of this, i.e. worse fuel consumption etc....although if that truly bothered me I wouldn't run a V6  ;D.

Mother tunnie has been running around in the 3.0 for much longer than she should have been, as weather has been putting me off doing it. MPG will be down, i would not leave it too long  :y (like i have  ::))

Also:
- more unburnt fuel reaching cats (may overheat and collapse)
- more unburnt fuel on side of cylinder bores washing oil off and causing rapid wear.
- more unburnt fuel contaminating oil in sump and causing accelerated wear everywhere.

Change the stat if you care about the car, leave it if you don't.

Best add it to the list along with the cam cover gaskets and breathers...and after all that hope to see an improvement in mpg as 50 litres just about does 200 miles round town...

Thinking about it isn't there a slim chance something isn't calibrated right and it's under-reading the temp...

There is a slim chance but Omegas seem to be fitted with decent quality temperature sensors.

There have been many people on here who have had to change their thermostats (me included) and a few who had to push the connector back on to the sensor when it fell off but I cannot recall any sensors found to be under reading.

I am really disappointed, I thought this thread was going to be about CURRIES, the indian type not the electrical retailer.
Now you cannot beat a nice Ceylon or a Phaal.
Hotter the better and I am anybodies, beats a G&T anyday.
Phewwwwwww :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I guess that in my case as I'm getting a reading then there's no problem with the connector, but no harm in checking that it's secure just in case...

wait until you take one to Italy or Spain. Outside temp 40C.
the gauge goes up

Is there no way of checking the coolant temperature remotely I have a hand held probe which you direct at the item to check temperature but where would you direct it , a hose will be a lot cooler outside than inside maybe you could get it on the transfer pipe that leaves the thermostat. Cant you also  check the function of the thermostat by running from cold and feeling the top hose to see if you get a sudden rise in temp when the thermostat opens.

Another thought is there a mileage guide on how long thermostats last before giving up the ghost or is it random

On my recently aquired V6 2003 I suspected an open thermostat as the max temp was 75 however if I switch off heater etc I get 90 , Is this why several posts claim a low running temp.
